Description

Wake up. Please, wake up! This planet needs you! There are those with awful intentions and you need to stop them!

“Unnghh,” Brownie grumbled. He opened his eyes to dim light. Next to him was Centi, but she seemed to still be asleep. He rubbed his eyes to awaken himself more and he sat up. He was on a cot that he shared with his wife, and an itchy wool blanket covered them. A dim light from outside the room allowed him to make out a few details of his sleeping quarters. He glanced around and saw that he was in a white room with shelves stacked with canned goods.

The last thing he remembered was being forced into a bunker. Well, “forced” is probably a strong word. It was most likely the only thing that was going to let him and the others survive the oncoming meteor.

The others. Were they all still okay? Did everyone he knew make it into a bunker or other shelter? The evacuation happened so suddenly that he could only keep track of his family. He stood up, careful to not wake Centi, and stepped over Chocolate Termite, his daughter, who was sleeping on a smaller cot. He exited his sterile white room and went out into the equally white and sterile hallway to hear whispering voices. The light was coming from a room a few doors down.

He peered into the room to see an icy alicorn and a reformed changeling that he barely knew. They caught sight of him and ceased their chatter. “Brownie Batter, right?” the alicorn asked in a gentle tone. They were both seated at a table.

“Th-that’s right…” he said. He very rarely got the opportunity to talk to alicorns, and this one specifically helped this whole group take shelter. “I-I’ve forgotten your name, I’m sorry…”

“No worries. I am Permafrost. This is Tarantula. He helped me with evacuating everyone here,” she says with a smile.

“Hello,” Tarantula greets him with a nod and a smile. But that smile quickly faded. “What’s wrong? You can’t sleep?”

“W-well… I thought I heard a strange voice, actually…” Brownie mentioned. Was that something he should have kept to himself? These creatures seemed trustworthy enough. After all, they saved him and his family…

They both seemed to perk up. “You did?” Permafrost asked. “So did we. We were just talking about it. Did it tell you to… wake up?”

“Yes!” Brownie exclaimed. Well, at least he wasn’t crazy, and wasn’t the only one to hear such a voice. “What was it? What do you think it means?”

Tarantula shook his head. “We were wondering the same…” he said. “We were sort of hoping to have a big meeting about it when everyone was awake…”

“What time is it anyway?” Brownie asked.

“It’s about seven in the morning,” Tarantula said. “And, well… another thing is odd. You know how we were all evacuated just after New Year’s? So… January?”

“Well, yes… That was merely a few days ago,” Brownie said, rubbing his temple with his hoof.

“It actually isn’t,” said Permafrost. “It’s now May.”

“W-what?” Brownie asked with wide eyes. “W-what does that mean? We were asleep for several months? How?”

“A wonderful question that we don’t know the answer to. But… I suggest you don’t worry about that at this time. We’ll gather in the main room in a few hours when everyone’s awake to discuss,” Tarantula said, his claws clicking as he anxiously tapped on the table.

“Ah… Thank you,” Brownie said. “I’ll, uh… see you in a bit, then…” Brownie responded. He gave the two one last uncertain look before heading back towards the room. There chatter resumed, but he didn’t bother to try and eavesdrop. How was it May? Do we even know if the meteor was stopped? What was the voice? What is going on?

He got back to his room and his worry eased slightly. Seeing his sleeping girls brought him comfort and gave him a sense that despite the uncertain future, maybe everything would be okay. He curled back up onto the cot and tried to rest until the meeting.

“...And that’s where we stand,” Tarantula voiced to the crowd of creatures. He stood on a desk that they were using as a makeshift podium. The crowd of ponies, dragons, and other creatures exchanged glances and murmured slightly. He continued. “It seems that we’ve all been asleep for months, we’ve all heard the strange voice, and frankly we don’t have an explanation for any of this…”

A pony raised their hoof. “Do we know if the meteor impacted us or not?”

A slight clamour of agreement raised in the crowd. Tarantula cleared his throat to continue. “We do not. In fact… if most are in favor, we can ascend to the surface and witness for ourselves what the situation is. Certainly whatever happened has passed by now, and it should be safe to come out of the bunker.”

“All those in favor, say ‘Aye,’” Permafrost asked.

“Aye!” much of the crowd said.

    “Those opposed?”

“I-I am,” Pastel Purity, a timid deer, voiced. It clearly wasn’t enough to sway any opinions, not like she felt she could do such a thing.

“Don’t worry, Pastel,” a green dragon said, comforting her with her wing. “If anything scary is out there, I’ll protect you.”

Pastel grew a small smile on her face, but was still very unsure about the whole thing. Regardless, Tarantula led the large crowd up the stairs to the large hatch that separated them from the rest of the world. He looked back at all the eager creatures, though some of them were looking more anxious, and he put his hoof around the latch. With a mighty push, the door swung open with a mighty metallic creak.

He stepped outside first and his jaw dropped. The sky was grey with clouds and what looked like soot. The bright vegetation that used to cover the land was now withered or virtually non-existent. A soft wind blew, at the very least, only to pick up some of the grey soot that covered the ground. Many others piled out of the shelter, only to stop in stunned silence.

“It’s clear now… We lost against the meteor,” Tarantula said.

A red pegasus stepped forward, looking terrified. “W-well, what do we do now?!”

“Red Skies, please, this isn’t the time to panic,” responded a unicorn with long black hair next to him.

“Easy for you to say, Dead Souls,” Red Skies murmured under his breath as he crossed his forelegs in front of him.

The unicorn rolled his eyes. He raised his voice for others to hear. “Well, first of all, we have a decent amount of rations to last us for a few months, right? We only ate for a few days before we all fell asleep mysteriously. So, we have enough to last us a little while. But that isn’t a permanent solution…” he mused.

A grey earth pony stepped away from the group and she played around with the earth beneath her hooves. “Um… he’s right,” she said, lifting her head. “This soil is far too silty to grow anything.”

Tarantula nods, pleased with the others’ intelligent input. At the very least, perhaps as a group they could figure out what to do. Hope may not have been completely lost. He stepped closer to the grey earth pony. “What is your name, dear?”

“U-uhm… Plain Jane,” she said in a quiet voice.

“You were a farmer before the meteor hit, yes?”

“That is correct,” she said. She wondered how he knew. She lived such a quiet life of solitude before the meteor struck that she didn’t think she was memorable to anypony.

“Do you think you can help us grow crops if we find fertile soil?”

“I-I… I was never much for teaching others… I don’t really know…” she said, slinking a few steps away.

“Darling, you can do it,” a voice said, catching everyone’s attention. From the crowd came a tall alicorn with a rainbow mane and a snow white coat. Everyone stared and whispered as she made her way through the crowd.

“I-Isn’t that… Aurora Dream? She used to be super famous! Well, a whole lot of good that fame does her now…” voices said among the crowd.

“H-huh?” Plain Jane said, intimidated by the mere presence of the alicorn. Had she been stuck in the shelter with this alicorn the whole time and she never knew about it? She had to have been the most beautiful creature she had ever seen, and she was approaching boring old Plain Jane?

The alicorn stopped before Jane and smiled, making the earth pony blush and recoil even more. Upon closer inspection, Aurora seemed to sparkle on nearly every inch of her body. “Do not be afraid, Jane. I am simply here to give some advice. You were a farmer, you say? Do you have any idea how useful that is right now? I may be an alicorn, but all I ever did was sing and act. They are not practical skills in an apocalypse, and I was about to retire before this meteor came and struck the dumb planet,” she sighs. “I would have given anything to have had a simple life like yours. And, your skills are very needed in these times. Well, I’d say that you’re one of the most essential members of our group. Isn’t that right, everypony?”

“Yeah!” The crowd cheered.

“Oh, yes! I would love to learn how to grow food! All I can do is sing and dance, too!” Red Skies says dramatically, falling onto Dead Souls, who rolls his eyes yet again.

“You see?” Aurora says, turning to Jane again. “You can save us, and we’ll help you in any way we can. Especially me. I’ll lend you all of my hooves if needed!” she chuckles.

Jane blushes fiercely from all the support and attention. She had never had this many pairs of eyes on her before in her entire life! But… they all believed in her. And this gorgeous alicorn before her believed in her, too! She stood up a little straighter. “Okay! I will help us all learn how to farm! But, the first thing is that we need to find fertile soil.”

“Agreed,” said Tarantula. He looked to Permafrost as well. “I think perhaps maybe we should try to find other survivors, too. Maybe others were able to get more established than we were since we were asleep for so long.”

“I think that will work, too,” says Permafrost. “So, everyone, let’s all pack up as much of the supplies we can and head elsewhere to find other creatures!”

Invigorated, the group claps and agrees as they head back into the shelter. They were able to get most of the food and water into saddlebags, and what they couldn’t they consumed there on the spot.

“Brownie, this is pretty scary,” Centi says, putting a hoof on her husband’s shoulder. “Everyone is so excited but why? The future is so uncertain… And what about that voice we all heard when we were sleeping?”

Brownie sighs and puts his wing around Centi and hugged her close. “It is very uncertain. But we have to hope for the best. We don’t really have much of a choice… Our only chance is to work together in the group.”

“Yeah, Mom! Teamwork makes the dream work!” Chocolate Termite exclaims.

Centi relaxed a bit upon seeing even her daughter was feeling optimistic in these uncertain times. Well, that might have just been how she was anyway. “Alright. I’ll hope for the best, too. I love you, Brownie.”

    “I love you, too.”

MLP: Post Cover

ONLY FIVE FUCKING MONTHS AFTER RELEASING THE COVER DID I FINALLY FINISH THE FIRST PAGE OMG. So, this first page may be a bit clunky, just because I have to kinda establish EVERYTHING.

These ponies on this page came from a land called Concordia before the meteor struck, and so their group will be known as the Former Concordians. They've all woken up after being put to sleep for several months to find that the meteor has struck their planet and rendered the soil infertile. Every creature in the group heard a voice telling them to wake up before they went back to the surface.

This begs many questions. Why did they sleep for so long? What was the voice? Are there any other survivors?

Hopefully time will tell.

I don't know how frequently I will be able to update this story. The second page is actually already written, I just have to draw the image. I also want to go back and edit it a bit, but hopefully page 2 will be up soon.
