A while back I was asked by a client to paint a reproduction, using watercolors, of the famous Hokusai woodblock print, Poem by Tenchi Tenno, for his brother who is a big fan of this particular poem and illustration. I did trace the lines for accuracy and the only changes I made was to complete the top of the middle trees and remove the rectangles containing the text of the poem from the top right corner. It was a fun practice trying to mix the same colors as the original print and using watercolors to achieve the flat gradations seen in the original woodblock prints. I think my only criticism is I should have kept the yellow colors a bit lighter and more muted...Watercolor and fineliner on paper, 14x11
P.S. I am aware that selling reproductions of famous artworks is generally frowned upon, but since both the client and I fully acknowledge that this is a copy strictly for personal use for which he only paid me for my time/effort, I think it's appropriate to share.
