Description It's always so difficult to take the first step.. especially when you don't know where it will lead you. It's almost like, going to another end of the world

Going back to some B/W penwork. I used a new 0.5mm black pen for the darker lines and an old one that is running out of ink for the lighter parts (sky and shading of lighter areas). I wanted to create contrast between the girl and the sky, the clutter and the openness, the black and white A lonely silhouette against the openness..

This one is quite personal, and I would love to hear your interpretation of it

I like the concept of this and what you have done although I think it has a lot more potential from some brilliant strange and wonderful things in the background as there's a whole scene of which you could still fill with more ledges, wineding paths, buildings, sunset, sea, and muc much more.

I really love your ability to capture texture and what you've done here is really nice I think it might equally have been nice if you'd inked some bits in with a fineliner just toe make some bits a little darker than the effect you get with a ballpoint pen.

I especially love the book case and the amount of detail that you have done or in some parts not done to really enhance the image it's brilliant. I love your wonderful checked floor too and the pile of clothes it really enhances the feel of mystical ness as if she's ust walked out of her bedroom and found a brand new world to explore.

I think perhaps if you had used just one coloured pencil crayon like a blue or something that would really have made things pop. When I work in black and white like this (which is often but I don't usually put it up on dA) I also have a metalic blue pencil crayon (I got in a pack of metalic pencils in a £1 shop but I dare say they'd be in a $ store or equally rather cheap else where!) and it does brilliant'y for just adding a little shadow here and there it really enhances a piece with out seeming like you've coloured it.

Again I love the testure you've done in the sign, book case, floor, grass, sides of the lefges and such it's all very wonderful and it's a very nice piece but I feel there should be something a little more in the background... Perhaps even if you had coloured it all with a black marker so the whole background was black and empahsized nothing-ness. I just think the plain white or the slightly coloured white doesn't really add to the wonderful image but stadley takes away.

Perhaps think about how you could make more use of a whole page, but lovely lovely work well done e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)"/>

Thank you so much for the detailed critic

I like your suggestion of more things in the background - I'll definitely look into that for my next detailed sketch. The color pencil advice is good as well and as I've never tried it, it will definitely be a good experiment

You're very welcome. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful!

I'm glad I could give you some ideas. Never go back to a piece once you submit it as finished. Unless you're going to resubmit it as another deviation! - I found this really helps me to improve by being able to look through my gallery and see how I've improved with each piece! (personal thoughts)

No worries, it was very helpful already

That's what I think too, but also because it's simply a bother - there are other ideas I want to put my efforts on! And improvements can be such a confident booster!

What I notice first is the invitation to find meaning. Judging by some of the comments you've received, I'm not the only one who finds this invitation. These are my favourite kinds of works. You've done a great job presenting depth and feeling.

I do, however, feel the sign is unnecessary in presenting this message. In fact, I even find it a little distracting. This is because I find the arrow draws my attention away from the girl's face. Although you've used relatively simple strokes, I feel you have captured her feeling perfectly. Her downward glance, nervous gaze, hesitant stance, and weak but barely noticeable grin captures the difficulties of making that first step quite well. I find the chasm strengthens that message; I can see she is afraid to make that first leap for fear of falling into the unknown abyss.

You've done a good job with your shading. I've tried pen work before and could never get the hatching right. (This is one reason I prefer to work digitally). My only criticism is that I can tell where your marker was drying out. You've done a great job bringing out clouds, but I feel the darker parts could be a little cleaner. However, you've done a good job bringing the focus back to the girl. Overall I think this is great work.

This is a very unique picture. I really like how you presented this idea, it's unique and kind of cute.

I think it could be better if the sign had some kind of destination listed, such as 'To: School' or 'To: College' if some specific journey inspired this piece, or even 'To: Life' if you mean for it to be more general. That's totally up to you of course, whether or not you add to it.

Anatomically, the girl looks pretty good. (: Her arms are a little bit too long and her legs are a little too short, just something to consider in the future. The perspective on the shelf is a little bit off compared to other objects in the image.

I like the way you used the extra space and I like the way you made the sign look old. Good job. (:

I absolutely ADORE this piece! Looks like it was in my favorites before you shared it to the thread I made! I very much like what you've done though, and it's even more impressive that it's done in pen! The floor the girl is sitting on along with the bookcase made me think of Alice in Wonderland sadly XD Not a bad thing though, I hope! Quite imaginative and well done, love it!

Yes, there is a game by American McGee that has an Alice in Wonderland game but a much darker concept. Otherwise, there's this neat rendition in a series of books that starts with "The Looking Glass Wars" which is also amazing

I like her expression. The environment is drawn well. The background and the sky looks good, the white patches looks like clouds. The perspective looks a bit off, like the top of the bookcase shouldn't be angled that way. I like the the texture and details you drew on each item.

I interpret it as maturing, growing older.

This piece struck me because I know this feeling exactly. The little gap between her "comfort area" and the new place is especially meaningful, because it shows that taking that first step isn't going to be easy--in fact, it's going to be more of a first leap to get where you're going.

I love the contrast you created, too, although I think the sky is a bit too bright. The clouds are just barely distinguishable, so I think that if you gave this a smidgen more definition, the contrast between her smallness and their vastness would be greatly enhanced.

I also love how you used her pose to convey emotions of trepidation and hesitation--you can tell how nervous she is, especially because (it looks this way, anyway), she is looking back toward what she knows instead of the unknowns ahead.

A great piece, it definitely makes you think
