And death plumed from the wet soil of her lawn like a rash of wild mushrooms infesting a forest, sporing from her social abjection and the ill intent of the townsfolk nearby. "What sort of woman," they'd fuss, "would live in such a place, surrounded by lizards, spiders, and wolves?" Or, "What manner of witch," they'd scoff, "could survive alone in such a desolate shithole without having whored herself to the low beasts she lords over?" But their intrusive condescension proved to be no more than the ignorant bumbling of nincompoops; the hollow mockeries of fools just before falling victim to their own folly. For when the sickness came, all those who gathered in their proposed civility found no safety in their numbers, the plight having rapidly stolen from them their smugness and vanity. It took only weeks for the entire town to be snuffed from the world of the living, and not more than a few months for the woman to collect their obtuse remains to use as decorations upon her lawn. And now, decades since she's quietly passed, her expansive Skull Garden still sits -- a tribute to the hubris of small-minded nobodies who were outlived by a little old woman who lived in a house in a tree.
