grave digger's biological parents were a batpony and a unicorn, but after an accident as a baby (one he doesnt remember) he was bounced around from home to home until he was about eight or so, upon which he finally found a home that kept him, despite his odd mannerisms
since batponies and 'day ponies' don't usually cross paths let alone have families, theres a belief that batponies are vampires/succubi and that any child would have bat wings, so most dont even really realize his batpony heritage. he comes from a type of batpony that tend to eat small animals like squirrels, rabbits, mice, etc. as well as fruit, as theyre omnivorous. since no one really truly knows where he comes from, or of his heritage, no one is quite sure what exactly he is. because of omnivorous and carnivorous creatures not really living in ponyville yet, there aren't really a lot previsions for folk that have differing diets. because of him not having a very good diet, he was always a sort of sickly, nippy child. he didn't really gain a lot of substantial weight. because of his odd appearance and even stranger habits, he spent most of his time alone or with his adoptive brother. his parents saw how unhappy he was, so they got him an older dog, since he didn't really like loud, excitable creatures. he did everything with the dog. he slept, ate, bathed, and even would sometimes sneak him to school with him. but he was old, and old dogs tend to die. he was absolutely heartbroken and inconsolable for a very long time. he refused to let anyone else bury his friend, and when he did, he got his cutie mark. so he digs graves for others when they can't do it themselves, and, being extremely empathetic, always leaves flowers for graves without any, and often sings to the graves. some have even started rumors that there's a singing ghost in the graveyard.
he tends to keep to himself, or with his brother, and his hunger never quite goes away. if only ponyville had a butcher...
