Description
Narcolepsy I shot last semester, for an assignment that required us to imitate or expand upon the work of a professional photographer. The phtoographer I chose was Eric Meola, and the image was from his personal work, depicting a face painted half white, half red, with more of the face visible.Originally, I had intended the image to depict creativity strugglling to express itself despite the monotony of everyday life. As I began painting with acrylic paint, the original concept transformed, reminding me of Greenest of Blue Days. It became not a simple statement of opposites, but moreover, how every day for me is a combination of both waking and dreaming at the same time, with the wavering lines crossing between one another.
The cracks in the paint are representative that no matter how mcuh I try to maintain the facade of 'normality' I will never be completely 'normal' as defined by the average of members of our society. The cracks, as well as areas without paint, were intended to convey that I am human, like everyone else: I am not my sleeping disorder, I am myself.
Will be in the print show at the campus gallery starting February 10th, along with works from other first year and second year students [*cough* `neom *cough*]

Stop using acrylics and start using water based face & body Paints!! Go to [link] or [link] and buy a kit to start you out. It is safer and easier that acrylics.

I picked up non-toxic tempura paints the other day for use on other people. I like how acrylic works when I'm painting myself, as I usually want the cracks, and the process of applying it, working with how the colours alter after it dries. And it doesn't matter as much if I poison myself- the doctors accomplish that already with all the various medications XD
Do you use brushes or airbrush when doing more than faces? Everyone locally seems to airbrush for speed, although I'm looking at cost of getting one, and kind of cringing, as my artwork just isn't high enough quality to justify it to me.

I use sponge and brush and get the same effect as airbrush with my techniques. I use acrylics on myself to along with Sharpie markers. I love your work and would love to see more. Keep in touch with me and if you need any advice, just ask. By the way, I do have an airbrush, but have not used it much. If you get one, I would love to see what you come up with for body art!

Wow! Wonderful photograph! The colors and texture are amazing-I love the detail that this photo captures! Really good, good work.
By the way, did it take long to get the paint out of your eyelashes?

Hi, I like this. I've got trouble with my occipital lobe, means this photo messes me up. It's partly the crop, it's partly the paint, but it works. It acts like Op Art. The eyes jump about and I can't really focus on the image as a face. The frank expression, direct honesty; yet conceilment and division with the paint. Maybe I'm reading too much of my own allegory, but for me this is very representative of what it's like to have a neurological condition, not to be one.

When I saw this pop up in my DevWatch it immediately peaked my interest and I knew it would require further inspection. I like the direction you went with this from a composition stand point. I've seen duality conveyed before with the face split in half by different color paint, however, more times than not the artist depicts the curature of the face as opposed to a very close, detailed, almost flat respresentation of the face. That's one thing that I thought made this stand out, the other is the revealing description: Thanks for sharing it with us. I've featured this work on Deviously Artistic (here )
