Well the species began on a planet that was sent over 5000 irken soldiers then a scientist gone mad( or totally brilliant) used a mutant virus nuke using DNA charges, these guys are just different result of the charges effects when the nuke went off.
Thus their wild nature broke through they grew fur strength canine teeth.
