Pleistocene South America somewhere.
A quick thought i had after watching a doc on tigers.
Smilodon fatalis mom presents a hamstrung Hippidion foal to her cub. She leaves him to work out what to do with it, that he may learn to deliver a killing bite.
Cats often use partially-killed prey to teach their young how to kill. But in Smilodon a throat bite would basically guarantee instant death, unlike tigers where it can simply cripple. So in this scenario she immobilises the foal, allowing it to live long enough for her son to take over. But who knows how these lessons played out.
