Description
A successor to fav.me/da973jhIt's 80,000 years ago, and we're 200m below the ground, in PeΘtera UrΘilor, a cave in the Apuseni mountains in what will one day be Romania.
It is winter time, and in the absence of forest reindeer (Rangifer tarandus), a male Eurasian cave lion (Panthera spelaea spelaea) seeks an alternative meal. As was done by his ancestors before him, his nose leads him into the cave, high in the mountains. In total darkness, he navigates his way into the cave, and blindly sense the presence of prey. The quarry is a dormant Gamssulzen cave bear sow (Ursus (Spelaearctos) ingressus), and her cub.
Citations may come soon enough....
This is probably my last deviation is a while, before I start school...

Β I do agree that this feline fellow is just hungry for a meal (and taking a fairly serious risk in attempting to beard Mother Bear in her own den); in fact the title stemmed from a failed attempt to homage "Sleep no more, MacBeth does Murder sleep" without directly quoting The Scottish Play.Β Β

Nice work !
That is called a dick move even by ice age standarts ! However I am sure even the lion will hurt very fatally

Yeah, I love cave lions too much to call them that, and if I manage to make a sequel, the sow will wake up and kill the lion.

Look's really good !
I dunno enough about mammals (or prehistoric mammals) so Im gon'na ask the question to you
Is it actually possible that the cave bear would wake up before the lion comes to close or is she completely helpless?

Thanks!!
Yeah, she's supposed to wake up, if (when, I've started school so I haven't the time) I make a successor. Of course, som e bears died in hibernation due to starvation and provided a meal for other predators, such as lions. But she'll wake up, how else do you think all those cave lion fossils ended up in caves?

Ahh ok. Good to know.
Yes that's a point.
How I already said I'm not that good informed about ice age mammals so I don't really know how much cave lion fossils were found in caves
Thank you for the explination tho
And that the reply came a bit late doesn't matter.

There's a reason we call them "cave lions" and why Goldfuss originally named them Felis spelaea, it was due to their association with caves. They didn't live in caves, and if we were to call them after their habitat, we would refer to them as "Steppe lion", as Cajus Diedrich does.

Still, in the holotype cave, Zoolithen cave in Germany, only 1% of all bones were lion, corresponding to 13 individuals of reproductive age. No cubs, since they didn't raise them there.
Of all the mammals that entered ice age caves, lions were the least likely to enter, they only did so as a last resort, when there wasn't enough prey available during winter, and they had to hunt bears or steal hyena kills.
Cajus Diedrich consequently calls cave lions a "fairy tale".

No problem, mate!
Indeed. It's amazing that Europe was that continent where lions and bears fought each in natural bases (and without humans involved).
