During the ice age, a species of large, herbivorous bear known as the Cave bear inhabited Europe. As suggested by the name, cave bears hibernated in caves during the winter, in the duration of which, some may have died due to starvation. But that was the least of their worries. Caves were a favorite place for giant Cave hyena packs to hide and devour kills, bad news for hibernating bears. Add to that the fact that during winter, Eurasian cave lions sought after sleeping cave bears and cubs when Reindeer were scarce, and we end up with a potential bloodbath.

I own nothing.

Mhm, the bones aren't lion.
If you're a cave bear, you'll have to deal with giant hungry lions, wolves and hyenas.
If you're one of the hyenas, you're stuck underground with giant hungry lions, wolves, and angry bears.

I don't think any of the participants would have liked to have been there.

And if you are a human or a Neanderthal, you bring all your friends and torch the cave with fire.

A torch won't keep a lion, hyena clan, wolf pack or mama bear at bay.

Not when they are on fire.

Do you seriously think an animal on fire would be more concerned with killing the thing that set it on fire, than putting out the fire?

Finally, when somebody has fire, they can actually see what's going on.

Set all the animals on fire? Little probable. You'll get taken down quickly.
Not very far, however.

You also can't torch a cave. Caves aren't flammable. Add that to the fact you will probably only get one hyena or wolf on fire while the others will be perfectly fine and attack all your buddies.

Yeah, caves can be damp places. Humans generally occupied cave entrances, going too far deep would usually be dangerous and tedious..
