William the Bloody got his name first not being a massacring vampire but being a misunderstood poet making awful (to some) poems in the 1880's. He was bitten by Drusilla and then his bloodshed nickname got a new meaning. He's been a worthy adversary of the Scooby Gang and eventually (spoilers) got a place in the Scooby Gang after having a chip in his brain and also (like Angel) got his soul back while still being a vampire. He's one of my favorite characters in Buffy and Angel series and has a special place in my heart just because he went from baddie to goodie with a well written transition throughout the series.
The thing that makes him different is that he's a bit of a pushover when he was still human, a poet that has struggled with his craft but when he was turned, he became this menacing beast that went toe to toe with Buffy for a time. Revealing his poetic side for us viewers, we learn that he had a heart, a side that we really weren't aware of before, giving his character more depth and us fans loving him more for it.
This scene I painted is a scene from the last episode of Angel. Probably one of the best episodes shown on TV, not just because it was the series finale but also because of this specific scene. A little bit of context; Angel and his gang is about to go after the biggest and baddest most powerful forces named the Circle of the Black Thorn, and before they went after them that night, Angel orders his men to do whatever they want the entire day. He said to think of it as if it's their last day on earth (yeah that's how powerful these enemies they're up against are) that Angel tells them to do the thing they'd want to do before they die.
Gunn helps out in his community, Lorne sings at a karaoke, Angel visits his son, Wesley spends time with Illyria / Fred (whichever way you want to put it) and Spike... Spike goes to a bar and get drunk but not because he's depressed. It's just liquid courage for him to stand up on stage and recite his poems at a poetry slam. WHAT A FUCKING BEAUTIFUL THING TO DO! It takes us by surprise, I know I was. It was something that made you think; Spike still writes poetry and would like to die a poet. Among the many times he died, when he got to choose the one thing to do before he does die, it's facing a crowd of people, just reciting his words. Letting us know that he can still love, and poetically speaking, his heart is still beating.
