Description Ano rules the bay that he lives in; the apex predator; the being that the other creatures fear. However, he is isolated from others of his kind...and what good is having a kingdom to rule if you're alone? Bubbles escape his blowhole as he calls out, hoping for a response...but all that answers is the emptiness of the water around him, and the roaring of boat motors in the distance.

This killed several birds with one stone...1) Practicing underwater backgrounds, 2) Practicing orcas, 3) Drawing Ano!
Ano does have curled in tail flukes, but I'm not yet confident enough to try to draw them ^-^;

Not half bad. He has a nice shape. The only note I would have is that the main body seems a bit small compared to his fins. But it's still a good start!

Thanks Orkid! =3 You should've seen it before I took it into Photoshop and moved things around. I don't know why orca anatomy is so difficult for me xD;

From this I'd say you definitely have the basic idea. Every body part is where it should be, and looks akin to the real thing. Do you use any reference?

Thanks! =3
I always use an orca anatomy tutorial that deals with circles, and where body parts and markings should be in relation to each circle. Its in my favorites collection 'tutorials'. For poses, I usually use my orca toys, to avoid copying someone else's photo or something - but that can cause issues, because not all of my toys have good anatomy...

If you mean the one by Skyebob, I'm familiar with it. It's what helped me get over my last few issues with anatomy placement.

To some degree, I use the same circles method, but in my case it's two circles in front (to represent the head and the rostrum, as to decide where the character's looking and from what angle) with a line to represent the spine (the body's pose).

I see. Using photos has been of help to me, but never in tracing or copying a pose, line for line. It's just that I think there's no substitute for looking at the real thing.

Yeah, that's the one
I've only actually finished three orca pictures using that tutorial. It helps a ton, I just have major trouble with drawing orcas =c
I know what you mean. But I also like being able to have my hands on the reference and turn and tilt to see from different angles and whatnot. I just wish more toy companies paid attention to anatomy! =c

Same here. Unfortunately, their designs are geared toward looking cute and buyable above all else.

I see where you're coming from. When I work on aircraft-related stuff, I actually prefer to do that, if I have a physical example on hand.

But whatever the process, the old saying of "practice, practice, practice" seems to be the best advice to go by.

Some of them try to make them look scary too. My #1 pet peeve is when they have female pecs and a male dorsal, or vice versa. It drives me crazy! xD;;
Indeed! I'm hoping to practice drawing orcas more. I really want to be able to draw them..

There's one of those on the shelf behind my head right now. Still has his tail-tag. Wild Safari, circa 1996. Looks like he's leering at me with his ugly mouth...

Yes. I'd be interested in seeing more of your orca art. As I said before, you seem to be at a good point already. In the meantime, if there's any way I can help, you know where to find me.
