After quite some time of reading this kind of fiction, and occasionaly writing some of my own, I tried to make a list of the common themes, cliches and the gang, mostly to summarize the genre and the most overused plot devices that you can find on DeviantArt.Related content

It's funny that you don't list under "Most common excuses" Because he wanted to be a woman. No I'm not being nasty to you here. I love stories where the male wants to become a female, but I rarely see such stories. So it's not a common reason at all.
It's a nice list, I could think up a dozen or more story ideas from it just by putting the different boxes together...

"but I rarely see such stories" that's the reason I don't list it under the most common excuses. It's category for most common plot devices for the change around this site.
