I've just recently started drawing portraits, so I'm no expert. I've been studying photographs and other people's work to see what works and what doesn't. One thing I lam earning is to try to eliminate the hard lines on the facial features and on the edges of the skin as much as possible. Sometimes it looks better to break up the edges in a few areas to show a light source. You might try showing a little more directional flow in the hair. I've also noticed that the outermost left side of the face (our left) turns down slightly. This is my first critique, hope it was helpful. Keep up the good work.

its a nice sketch. keep practicing. one advice (which i myself don't follow) is to use a mirror to see the drawing every now and then while drawing. it helps!

In my book, you should draw cubes. Seriously, it's a perfect exercise to learn how to make perspective (not sure that you know what i mean... my english aint as good as i wish ) in your sketches. My drawing teacher used to torture us wirth that f*#$%&g cubes, but today, i have to say that - it was the best practice in my life. Thats the first thing you should do to make your sketches better
Good luck!

what do you mean by making cubes? have you got any examples?

rogozinskimic In reply to AnoushayKhan [2013-12-25 13:58:26 +0000 UTC]

Cubes. Just cubes... Like that: okazik.nazwa.pl/okazje/2012-09… Draw your cube in many many positions. Naext, try to draw two cubes, three cubes... like this one: digart.img.digart.pl/data/img/…

But you can't use a ruller, you should do it "by your eye".Β

i'll start practicing but how will it help me in making portraits?

rogozinskimic In reply to AnoushayKhan [2013-12-26 10:54:34 +0000 UTC]

It aint gonna help you with portraits, its gonna help you with perspective, which is damn important everywhere

I'm curious to know if you worked from a reference.Β  It would be nice to see the sketch and the reference (if there is one) side by side or have the option to click on a link to it to compare it and find your trouble spots.Β  First off, I can definitely see the amount of work you've put into it.Β  It's most visible around the eyes and nose.Β  The shading in the eyes and the care you've used to handle them really show a sort of depth and liveliness.Β  I can really see the slight bag underneath the eye and the glimmer of light is a nice touch.

What I can see needs a little work is the jawline and along the collar of the shirt.Β  It's not as developed as the rest of the picture and doesn't show the same care of handling that you did in the upper part of the face.Β  It has a more unfinished look to it and because of the coloration of the photo with that area being more light, it draws more attention to itself.Β  As a viewer, my eyes go to that space immediately before going into the area that you did so beautifully.Β  I think if you were to give it some more shading and work on crafting it a bit more like you did with the eyes and nose, that part would become less noticeable.Β  The only other critique I can give you is your work with the hair.Β  While the strands around the face look pretty natural, the hair itself looks pretty flat.Β  I've found some Deviant Art tutorials that might be of some use to you in your journey to improve your already pretty awesome art.Β  cataclysm-x.deviantart.com/art… <-- That tutorial gives you an idea of how to create shading and highlights on all colors of hair in a traditional style with the use of either leaving them blank or using an eraser to help create depth.Β  akalilith.deviantart.com/art/H… <-- This is more of a walk-through of how to do hair from picture to picture along with some tips and notes in the artist's comments down below.

All in all, I think you've done a great job with this picture.Β  If you give it just a little more love in a few critical areas, I think you'll be a bit happier with a more finished feeling piece.Β  I hope you keep on doing your art and asking for critiques to help you really improve your already wonderful skills.Β  Thank you for sharing your art.Β
