Description A small scene on merely 1 shelf in the huge tower of skulls at the Killing Fields outside of Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

So many died in this area - the senseless genocide of the Pol Pot regime against his own people is absolutely mind-blowing and horrifying.

The commemorative tower was erected in the field to pay homage to those helpless victims. I can't help feeling however that these skulls should be laid to rest instead of being a public spectacle.

Granted, such a shocking sight is definitely effective in drawing the attention of both locals & foreigners to an event so recent in history and so tragic in circumstance, which is otherwise swept under the rug.

How many out there know a fragment of what has gone on in Cambodia, how many out there know anything about all the violence and horror that is still going on around the world?

Then again, what can we really do anyway...I'm still musing from my comfortable bed in my cushy upper-middle class Australian lifestyle. As much as it saddens me, would I really go out and leave everything behind to help de-mine in Cambodia, or give my hands in aid in Africa or wherever else there's conflict?

It takes an amazing kind of selflessness to be that person. That person is not me, or most of us. But gosh - knowing is better than complete ignorance.

Lol now I've written a mini-essay. Silly Ange.

So very sad..But I am glad I was able to see these images and read your comments, otherwise I would have been one of the ignorant ones as I did not know about any of these things that happened in Cambodia

Amazing photo. As dark as it is, I think it's a very fitting way to remind people of what has happened- though this is a result of genocide, it's similar for war: a commemorative monument is good in memory of those who died, though people also need to be reminded of the horror that it marks...

Ok, read the comment, my bad, should have done it before posting in the first place.
I see what you mean by laying them to rest, but a horrifying display like that should make people think twice before starting violence ever again.

An interesting point is the first thing Viet Nam did after the U.S. left is to invade Cambodia and go after Pol Pot. It seems to be quite overlooked, and very nice of them.

Lots of different nations & parties had vested interests in Cambodia, which became somewhat of a littering ground for other people's agendas.

A means to an end? History's written by those who won right...

Tough headspace for anyone - tougher for the locals. Much sadness indeed.
