At this point in time, Barnakos was not very old himself. He was about a year old and already large for his age, and Nanuq, his handler, had been caring for him for the past few months. He trusted her, and loved her dearly as she was his rescuer in his great time of need. So when Nanuq brought in the male mammoth calf that she lovingly dubbed Tuakpik, it was no question that Barnakos would protect it with his life. However, Nanuq had gone missing; at this point, Barnakos had all but given up hopes for her return-- after all, this was not the first time he had been abandoned by a handler, and despite his thoughts that she could never possibly leave his side, she was gone. He didn't know where else to turn. In the night, she disappeared without a trace. All her belongings gone except the tack she had used to ride on his back. The campfire she had built was extinguished purposefully, and the winter snow had melted away any footprints that could have led him to her side. He smelled unfamiliar scents with her, but he couldn't make out whether it was the wild animals of the forest, or some other presence... Her scent was faint, and so were the others, and he quickly lost her trail. He was now the sole protector to the small, fragile mammoth... and protect the small mammoth he would. And together, the pair would grow as they searched Tokotna for their handler, and eventually they would learn to fight for one another in times of need.
