Description
This is a little bit of a revisit to an old idea – “Orbit” was originally just me mucking about but became very popular for prints and publishing – however I never really thought that much about it at the time (I was literally just sketching space art as a bit of fun between projects). I loved the idea of the piece so now, 8 years on I've had another stab at it.“A highly advanced race builds an enormous spaceport off the coast of a continent, dwafing the 20km high skyscrapers on the land, the main structure brushing the cloud layers with near 100km diameter docking spurs surrounding it. Built above the main structure, another level that is beyond the atmosphere – allowing craft to dock without braving the weather on the planet”
Painted in Adobe PS CS3
Wacom Intous 3 Tablet
Original res 5k wide
About 20-22 hour work.
I used some great photos of Earth from space as reference for the world.

I've had this as one of my desktop wallpapers for years before I found it here. I love how the city is designed. It looks like a domed city connected to a spaceport via a space elevator. I really like the effect of the atmosphere too.

What an inspired and truly talented artist. Thank you so much for replacing the initially cheesy cover for the urantia book with a work of art that sends chills down my spine when i look at it. XD It could be my personal bias, but i see divine inspiration behind so much of your artwork. Combining the harmony of nature with the progressive mindset of engineering is a technique i love to employ in my environment art for tripmine studios. Keep up the good work, everyone loves it!

Cool perspective, it could use some more detailed highlights in the dark/light transitions. The lighting overall seems a bit imbalanced, the dark area should have some more lighting reflections.

This is Incredible!
How much to commission art from you?
I need to illustrate 5 pages in graphic novel format and 1 cover page to pitch a concept.
Thanks,
Andrew

This... is truly amazing. I am wondering if I could feature it in a post about space elevators, cities in the sky, futuristic cities, and what have you. I run a science, tech, and sci-fi website at storiesbywilliams.com. You'd get full credit of course, and I really do love featuring original work by artists on this site.

Super awesome I'm using this as my desktop background
the only minus to me is the over-sized moon, its a real science fiction cliché.. (or is that the planet and is the civilization on a moon?)
I'm hoping humanity will someday get to the point where we can actually build stuff like this...
great job on giving an idea about how that would look like!
I wonder how that huge structure would look like for an observer at the surface of the world..

I'd just like to say how brilliant this piece is, and that this could very easily pass for a photograph, were it not so far-fetched for the minds of today.
