Description
In a few hours Gmod 13 beta and Gmod 12 will become one.I will miss it. Garry's Mod 13 is better, but 12th will remain a part of its history.
One thing I don't quite like is the way new Gmod handles addons. Oh well, I'll just be choosing models I will need prior to making pictures.

Last Picture I made in Gmod 12.

I do miss gmod 12. I found it easier to use and the face pose tool would not constantly screw the face up.

I do like it more too, loads faster, interface more straightforward. That took some time to polish up though. At the time it wasn't that great.

Why exactly did Garry need to update it to the horrid 13?

Well...this whole running around with beta and patches and new features brought attention, so I would say it is a marketing move.
However, I prefer to believe that aside from financial benefits from all this stuff, it is a step forward and it will get better. Us humans, we're not exactly the type to take changes easily, but we are also extremely adaptable, so, we'll get used to it.
Also Workshop gives more protection in terms of copyrighted creations, so no reuploads of stuff you didn't make, creator has control of when and what to update (updates automatically). For creators of stuff it is a step forward.
------------
This is just my opinion though.

How does it manage the addons? I'm in the rural wilderness of slow American wifi.

It uses workshop which is basically an improved toybox. The models from gmod.org will not work as addons anymore, the only way to get em to work is to extract them directly into gmod folder.
At the moment everything is just a big giant mess. Garry has reset the workshop, so all the lua based things have to be adjusted, may take a while. Hell, not even a bodygroup tool. Gmod beta is still available and at the moment it is actually better.

Classics is Gmod 9 and War of The Servers made it such.
Gmod 12 will become classics when Gmod 14 will be out.

Ok.
But still, I hope they fix the 'run in window' mode soon, its nearly impossible for me to admin without so...
