Description The old shack the young dragons used as a club house was of little help in sheltering Fliz and Troi from the heat. Instead, they retreated deep into the main bore of the mine next to it. The air within the old tunnel was cooler, but both dragons continued to pant heavily. "I didn't... think it wath... thuppothed to be... thith hot." Troi gasped. Fliz pressed herself up against the damp stone wall, eager for the cold it provided. "It is... much warmer today... than yesterday. I feel so... stupid for... leaving my canteen... at home." the blue dragon wheezed. Troi had found a rusty panel from some old machine to sit on. His limp wings were spread out on the floor as he tiredly slumped forward. The little black dragon didn't even seem to care that his tongue dangled out of his mouth like an empty balloon. "Can't we go... deeper in?" he whined, looking over at Fliz. "I can't... see in the dark. I am... unable... to make... those fire orbs... that Drex can. Just being in... this far... makes me nervous." "There'th... got to be... thome way.... of... making it cooler... in here." They both fell silent for a few minutes as they focused on trying to cool down. "You know... what would have been good to do... today?" Fliz eventually asked, "Swimming." The black dragon shook his head slightly. "But I can't thwim." The tunnel momentarily rang with Fliz's laughter. "Don't be... absurd Troi. Paddling isn't that big of an issue. With all that... air you've got, you'd have a harder time sinking anyway." Her ears sprang up suddenly with realization. "Oh. My. God! You mentioned earlier about making this tunnel cooler?" Troi lifted his head and looked over at her with raised eye ridges. "Yeth. Why?" "I can do that!" Fliz quickly righted herself and started hopping gleefully in the mine's tiny stream. "I can do that, and I don't know why I didn't think of it sooner!" Having gained her friend's curiosity, the blue dragon settled back down so that she could focus. Fliz took a seat and tucked her head in comfortably above her chest. Moments later, the water around her began to freeze over. Troi watched in astonishment as his own steamy breath became more and more noticeable in the decreasing temperature. The ground around both dragons was obscured by a growing mat of delicate ice crystals which quickly spread to the tunnel's walls. Even the gaps between Troi's scales were turning white. The grey fur around his front legs were now more silvery in color, with the ends of the individual hairs being coated in ice like tiny needles. Fliz had turned a much lighter shade of blue and seemed to sparkle in the faint light seeping in from the mine entrance. Frost clung to the edges of her scales, forming a patchwork of the tiny crystals. She let out a puff of frost as she came out of her concentration and looked around. The blue dragon smiled proudly over to her friend. "How's that?" Troi shivered a tiny bit as he brought his head to rest in the fur covering the front of his body. Thick clouds of steam swirled from his nostrils and a wide smile stretched over his face. "That'th th-tho much better. And look at all thethe little cryth-talth. They're on everything." His ears perked up when Fliz started giggling. "I'll say. You look like a marble statue." The black dragon stretched his wings out before folding them over his back. Less and less steam flowed from Troi's mouth as he lowered his own internal temperature. "Theeing that being done alwayth fathenateth me. It-th crathy how we are tho vulnerable to heat, but can make platheth and object-th freethe tho quickly." Fliz carefully lifted her paws out of the holes that had formed in the ice around them. She allowed herself to slide down until she was stretched out across the frozen stream. "Oh I've made things freeze before. Particularly when Drex is getting on my nerves, though I've been diligent in avoiding that I mess up any of my books by freezing them." After a while, Fliz folded her neck into a tight S shape, giving her head a spot to rest on the upturned plates. They both quietly relaxed in the frigid tunnel together until Troi spoke up again. "I've theen Ma do thith thometimeth. She can make our little cave get really cold really fath-t." "You should be able to do all this too." Fliz sighed, "You are part frost dragon." The black dragon nodded in agreement, but pulled his ears back regretfully. "I've never tried it. The clotheth-t thing to thith for me would be making a wind bubble and filling it with thnow." "Like a personal snow globe?" Fliz asked, glancing over at Troi. He laughed a little and shook his head. "It-th more like a mini blithard, but juth-t ath comfortable ath thith." The blue dragon shrugged and laid her head back down on her paws. "If it helps, it helps. You'll have to show me that sometime."
