The four dragons briefly went over rules again before splitting into teams. Vliticus immediately decided to join Fliz so that both teams would be evenly matched. They made quick work of building up their defenses. Vliticus constructed a thick, rectangular mound in the snow that he steadily built higher and higher to conceal both him and his sister. It was narrow, and didn’t provide room for anything more than just the two of them to move around behind. He set to work digging a hole underneath for his blowgun while Fliz farther strengthened the wall by coating it in ice. The yellow dragon had just finished blowing the remaining snow out of the way around the hole, and looked up at his sister. “ I’m interested to see what Troi thinks of this game. He’s never been a part of our snowball fights before.” “I think he’ll catch on real quick.” Fliz assured him, “Drex will help him understand what to do.” Vliticus nodded. Their brother did take these games seriously, most of the time. He turned his attention to the other fort, and saw their friend peeking over his teams’ defenses. “Are you guyth ready to get therved!” Thinking quickly, Fliz shouted back. “What?” She held a claw up to her mouth as a signal to Vliticus. Troi began to repeat what he’d just said, but was quickly silenced by a snowball that Vliticus shot at him. He put a couple more snowballs in Troi's face as the black dragon tried to pester them some more. Finally they saw Drex push Troi below the wall where he wasn't such an easy target. Vliticus looked over at his sister and did his best to not start laughing. Fliz shook her head as she giggled, and soon both of them roared with laughter. "Oh that was hilarious. Just standing there shouting at us. We built these forts for a reason you silly dragon." Fliz pressed a paw to her face while she laughed even harder. "I really can't believe he actually thought we hadn't heard him." crowed Vliticus, burying his head in the snow between his paws. Fliz let one of her wings stretch out over her brother. "We should g-give him a break. This is still the first time Troi has ever participated in one of our snowball fights." With a chuff, Vliticus raised his head up and shook the snow off of it, still grinning. "Alright then. Well let's see if we can't put some more snow on him." Vliticus slid a long metal pipe out through the hole in the wall. He moved over so that he was laying behind the blowgun and scooped some snow into it. Just as he looked out of the hole, a snowball struck him just below the eyes and left a trail all the way down the top of his muzzle. The yellow dragon leapt out of the way as he brushed some snow out of the fur around his nose. Fliz looked back through her hole and growled. "How rude." Across the clearing, they could hear Drex congratulating Troi on the shot. "Yeah! That was a pretty good shot! I wonder if you could try it again!" With a quick nod to his sister, Vliticus raised his wing in the air until it stuck up above the wall of the fort. "No Vliti! Not this again! Drex would know!" Fliz whispered harshly at him. She pressed her head against the wall to see if anyone would take a shot. Nothing was happening. The blowgun in the other fort wobbled a little before being pulled back behind the wall. A moment later, one of their brother's legs appeared where the pipe had been. "They've switched places. I don't know why they would have to." Fliz informed Vliticus. Slowly he let his wing drop, allowing the muscles a chance to relax before raising it up again. It wasn't meant to be held up like this for long periods of time. "Come on now! Do something!" Vliticus was loosing his patience. He growled slightly as he focused on his brother's fort. So far there was no sign that they would take the bait. Fliz continued to watch from her side, but soon lost interest. "I don't think it's going to work Vliti. You and Drex pulled this trick on me a couple years ago. I think he knows what we're up to." Shifting his position on the ground slightly, Vliticus let the blowgun drop out of paws as he looked over at his sister. "Yeah, maybe so. There was still that chance that Troi would fall for it and give me something to... Something's wrong." Something had started to feel odd about the end of his wing, so Vliticus brought it back down. Sure, leaving it extended straight up for that long might have done something to a nerve. What he noticed most was that the tip of it felt slightly heavier. In a moment both he and Fliz discovered why. A collection of icicles clung to the edge of Vliticus's wing, joining together into a white glob of ice that wrapped over the top of the wing as well. Wisps of frost whirled around Fliz as she bared her teeth in anger at being fooled the exact same way again. She leapt up and braced her front legs against the wall of the fort. A burst of frost escaped her jaws and just barely seemed to miss Troi. "I hope that got you!" she growled. "Don't think we won't retaliate! Both of you are in serious trouble now!" This time Drex poked his head over their wall. Had he forgotten the consequence of such an act? Fliz blew another cloud of frost at him as he was joking around, catching the red dragon right in the mouth when he had opened it. Immediately Drex stopped talking and disappeared behind the wall. "That's the second time I've fallen for that. And here we thought they weren't gonna try anything." Being equally upset now that his own plan had failed him, Vliticus carefully broke the icicles off his wing and ground them under his paw. "It's still good Fliz. We've had four successful hits on their side verses the two they've got on us. Drex and Troi are lacking in strategy. So far we've got this." His sister adjusted her wings as she laid down next to him. She took a quick glance at him and sighed. "We have to come up with a way to get even. They've caught us off guard, now we need to reciprocate." "What if we plugged their pipe somehow?" Fliz shook her head a little, but stopped as she considered the idea farther. A sly grin crept over her face. "That's actually a good idea Vliti. Cover me." Vliticus nodded and grasped the end of the pipe. He sent a snowball hurtling over Drex's head when the red dragon tried to peek over the top of his own fort. As soon as their brother had ducked back behind his defensive wall, Fliz lifted her head above hers and released a cloud of fog towards the blowgun at the other fort. It enveloped the end of the pipe before dissipating, leaving a couple large icicles that dripped down over the opening. "There. That should keep them busy.", she stated. Both dragons watched and listened as their rivals discovered the frozen blowgun. "How long do you think it'll take for them to break all the ice off of it?" Vliticus asked. "Oh, maybe five minutes or so. We can plan our next steps for once they can shoot at us again." The yellow dragon rubbed one of his paws against the fur on his chest before looking back outside. A little cloud of snow blew off the wall in front of him as he sighed. "If they just start pelting us, then we really can't plan for how to respond." "True, but they're more likely to trick us into EEP!" The blue dragon suddenly jumped when a snowball splattered over her neck. She quickly shook it off and squinted through the spotting hole. At the same time, Vliticus slid his blowgun outside the fort. "Should I get ready to shoot back." Fliz shook her head without turning away. "I think that one was thrown, but load it just in case." The yellow dragon shoveled snow into the end of his pipe and peered out toward the other fort. Just then he felt the pipe shutter in his paws. "Aw shoot. How's this for karma." Vliticus growled as he held the pipe up to his eye. "Guess what just happened." "They plugged it?" Fliz could already guess that this was indeed what happened. Troi was taunting them from the other side of the clearing, but neither Vliticus nor Fliz paid any attention to him. She only yelled over the wall to the other fort, "You two are such cheaters!" It was clear Fliz was frustrated that Drex had copied their plan. Meanwhile, Vliticus clattered his claws around inside the pipe but struggled to reach the blockage. "Ga! It's too deep in there. I can't dig it out. I'll have to dislodge it some other way." He chuffed as he glared in thought at the useless blowgun. The yellow dragon then pressed his mouth against the end of the pipe and inhaled. Both chunks of snow immediately broke loose, being swept into his mouth in a rush of air. His eyes started watering as he sat up. With a groan, Vliticus shook his head from side to side and shuttered. "Ow! Ooww! I sh-should not have d-d-done that. T-t-too c-cold.” Fliz looked over at her brother who was clutching his head in one of his paws and grimacing. "Here, lets switch places. I'll take some shots while you thaw out." Vliticus moved out of the way for his sister, who quickly replaced him so that he could recover. She slid the blowgun out of the way and lay down in its place. Just as she turned her attention to the other fort, a cloud of frost swept over her face and instantly froze into a mass of icicles. Fliz flinched and began clawing the solid chunk of ice off her muzzle. She tossed the ice on the ground with a growl as laughter drifted from across the clearing. “That’s it. We’re not fooling around any more. Are you good to shoot again Vliti?” “Ge-getting there.” The blue dragon nodded sternly to her brother. “Let me know when you are. Troi is a really good aim.” Their opponents were still laughing as Fliz refocused. She took a breath and coated one of Troi’s exposed legs in ice before he realized it, causing him to leap away from the hole in their wall. Another snowball was lobbed in their direction, but failed to hit either dragon. “Oy! Give us some time to celebrate!” Drex shouted. “Not on your life!” Fliz yelled back with a grin. Vliticus blinked a few times and shook himself free of any lingering numbness, ruffling his fur in the process. He crept back over to his sister and gently nudged her with one of his paws. “Ok. I think I’m ready.” Fliz got up and moved back to her spotting post, careful not to give Drex or Troi anything to throw snow at. “Can you see the hole in their wall?” Vliticus fetched his blowgun out of the snow and loaded it before looking out across the clearing. “Yes.” “Close it.” The yellow dragon responded quickly to his sister’s order and sent a shot at the other fort where it flattened over the hole Drex had been using to spy through. They could hear their brother growling when he noticed what had happened. “Let them have it until I say otherwise.” Fliz then pressed herself against the wall and watched with glee as the other team scrambled to counter. Her brother sent clumps of snow flying towards the opposing fort in rapid succession. The yellow dragon kept firing as quickly as he could shovel snow into the end of his pipe, raise it to his mouth, and blow. Some of the snowballs simply bore into the side of Drex’s fort. Others flew through the hole around Troi’s blowgun, causing the black dragon to yelp several times. Finally she set her paw gently on Vliti’s back to get his attention. “That should make them nervous.” “I wasn’t even aiming.” Vliticus chuckled. “I think I got Troi a few more times. Now they know we’re getting serious.” The blue dragon went to work replenishing their stockpile of snowballs while her brother set his blowgun off to the side and relaxed. “That will certainly give our adversaries the chills. I honestly didn’t think you could shoot that fast.” Vliticus grinned at Fliz gleefully. “I might have practiced a little.” “Well now we’ll just wait for whatever counter Drex can think of.” They didn’t have to wait long. In moments a stiff breeze came up, bringing with it a dense fog that quickly enveloped both dragons. The air was rapidly becoming colder, and patches of frost began to form over their scales. Grabbing his blowgun, Vliticus broke off the little bits of ice that had formed on it and reloaded. He squinted against the tiny pieces of ice that blew in around the pipe and focused. The yellow dragon could barely make out the other fort through the clouds. What he was able to see gave him a clear understanding of where to shoot. He took careful aim where the cloud was thickest. Troi suddenly screeched from the other side of the clearing when a snowball struck him in the mouth, allowing the wind to let up as the fog faded away. Another snowball was sent through the hole in the other fort where it caught Drex just above his eye. Both dragons waited while their opposition was left reeling from the attack. Drex finally raised his wings as he peered over the wall at them. “You got us! We’re done guys! We surrender!”
