He's probably referencing the TV Tropes article on how people in fiction never have to worry about the temperature of lava, flames, etc as long as they don't come in contact with it (when in reality the air around it would be superheated): [link]

Ah i see...
Well I'm aware that the rising heat from the lava would be enough to literally melt his face off at this close distance.
I didnt think that would really matter here though,as direct contact would also have a veery different effect on anyone
