Description

Meet my newest creation, Noth. I will be wearing this to A-Kon in Dallas, so watch out for me if you're going!

See the mask in action here! www.youtube.com/watch?v=K152Bb…

Omg you have no idea how proud I am of him. I’ve been working on it over the course of a few months. Started in March and I walked my friends through the steps as well.

Noth was completely hand made by me. I used  s tutorial for the resin blank.

The antlers are 3 part casted resin that are removable
The eyes are clear resin with hand painted removable irises.
The teeth are casted resin from an original sculpt.
The ears are foam with dyed minky fur. They connect to the jaw with a cable so they move when i open my mouth.
The markings were dyed onto the fur with acrylics
The fur is all hand sewn and the mane was applied lock by lock and sewn into the seam

Is Noth a creature of your own creation? The design and execution is absolutely gorgeous. I just adore how haunting and beautiful he is! Nicely done.

It sure is!

Thank you so much. I'm so proud of this costume and it brings me endless
happiness to know that you love it too!

I see a hint of the Forest Spirit from Princess Mononoke in its face, which is part of the reason I'm so drawn to it, I think. I've had a similar creature floating around in my head for a few years now, waiting to be created.

How does the weight of resin compare to other materials? I've crafted antlers before, but they're so heavy that I need a shoulder mount to be able to even wear the mask. (Granted, the antlers are also so large that I can't fit through doorways.) I've never worked with resin before, but it seems promising.

Yeah, I definitely wanted to incorporate a kind of eerie deer human look
like the forest spirit. And it's funny, even though it looks very different to the
forest spirit in Princess Mononoke, a lot of people thought I was dressed as him
at the con I went to.

Well the antlers are solid resin so they are definitely still weighty. I would try to use
a different material if I ever did them again or I would try to do a slush caste somehow
so it's hollow inside. They feel about the same weight as a real antler though so if that's
what you wanted, it would be a good choice. I don't have to wear a shoulder mount that's
for sure! It's worth experimenting with. I don't really know what else I would use that would
be just as durable and the right texture.

That. Is awesome. I like how it looks just white and with no hair.

Too cool! (: I love the way you painted the horns and that's a really good idea with the soft cabled ears, I probably would have made mine out of plastic which wouldn't be nearly as cool! I also really want to make a partial fur suit now. xD I wonder if one made out of real fur would be more or less suffocating to wear. lol

Thank you! Yeah, it does pay to have flexible light weight ears. Especially with this mask since the
horns added a lot of weight.

I highly doubt real fur would feel any better, considering that there is not much stretch and the leather
doesn't breathe. I guess it would depend on where you put it and how it was applied. You should totally
try making one though. It's pretty rewarding!

StorybookCreatures In reply to AnyaBoz [2016-06-13 21:33:03 +0000 UTC]

Really? I didn't know resin was dense, I always thought of it as light plastic. I would have made the horns out of paper mache, not as durable but definitely light weight.

Hmm, you're right, maybe I could do just the mask with real fur, gloves and shoes with faux fur. Real fur probably wouldn't last very long on gloves or boots as well, constant rubbing breaks and strips the hairs. Ah, the hardest part will be picking what to make!!!!

You call it Noth, is that something specific? Because I keep looking at it and thinking of the god of the forest from Princess Mononoke

AnyaBoz In reply to Tsubasa-wing-child [2016-06-13 16:44:32 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, Noth is just a character I created from my imagination. He does have a similar energy to
the forest spirit, but definitely has plenty of differences. I mainly based him off one of my room
guardians named Rakul.

I'd love to know how you made the antlers, as I have my own set that I am struggling to make...

AnyaBoz In reply to prismakat [2016-06-13 16:49:28 +0000 UTC]

Haha well there was a ton of trial and error involved. I probably wouldn't do it the same way next
time.
Instead of sculpting two full antlers and trying to take molds of them, I sculpted 3 parts of one antler
that could be connected and turned different directions so I could use it for both sides. I made silicone
molds for each antler part and cast them in resin. My molds were not very good though and they leaked
a lot. It was extremely frustrating haha. I'd have to make better molds next time.

This whole thing is so cool, but...what is the white area right under the chin, before the mane starts? It sometimes looks like a gap, and sometimes like bare leather, like it shaved there? I cant figure it out xD sorry!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AnyaBoz In reply to tayleaf [2016-06-13 16:50:25 +0000 UTC]

Haha it's just fur, but I have since died it a darker color so it blends more smoothly into
black of the mane

This is so fun to see!!! I've always thought your dolls were definitely within the realistic creature costume style, and to see a mask of your work, as one of your mysterious creatures, it's so thrilling!!! Congratulations on this beauty!

It's a little bit hard to put on, but I am used to it. It's heavy, but not uncomfortable
and of course it can get a little sweaty but that's with any mask.

Appears to be gloves that have been painted. If you look closely, you can see the seams.

Maybe... but for now it's just fun to do it for myself. I only have the motivation to
make one costume per year just for me, I don't know how much fun I would have making
commissions of them.
