Description St. Raphael
Materials: Watercolor paper (9x12 in.); pencil; black, gold, and silver ink; watercolors; white acrylics

Well, I finally finished this thing. I started this in February, and finished it about an hour ago. It's not even that this thing was just really complicated and would normally have taken such a long time. It just took a long time. Which is frustrating. I had planned on finishing this before Lent started, and Lent was ages ago now. My scanner is too small, and I didn't exactly stitch this together very well.

Anyway, here he is: St. Raphael. I'm fairly happy with how he turned out, despite the long time I spent doing it. I'm not really sure what inspired me to do a picture of him, other than that he was the only Archangel I've never drawn before, but I'm very glad I did.

St. Raphael is the angel who appears in the book of Tobit in the Old Testament. Ok, honestly, I have to say this is one hilarious book.

So it starts out with this fellow called Tobit. Everything is just kind of going wrong for Tobit. He's gone blind because some birds crapped in his eyes. His wife comes home with a goat, and he's convinced she's stolen it. And he's awfully depressed, and prays to God to deliver him or else pretty much just to kill him. Meanwhile, there's this girl Sarah who has been married seven times, but the demon Asmodeus has killed off every single one of her husbands before she can have intercourse with them. So she prays a similar prayer. So God sends the angel Raphael to help them. Tobit sends out Tobias (his son) to get some money that he has deposited. Well, Tobias runs into Raphael, who is pretending at first he isn't an angel. And he pretty much wants to go with Tobias, randomly, and claims he's a distant relative of his.

Well, so Tobias and Raphael go out, and along the way Tobias is washing his feet in the river. And this gigantic fish attacks him. Raphael makes Tobias grab the fish, and tells him to cut out the gall, heart, and liver and keep them because they have medicinal value. So Tobias is like "oh, ok". Then later, he asks "So what medicinal value is there in the gall, etc." And Raphael is like "Well it just so happens if you use it in such a way, it cures people afflicted with demons and it will cure a man afflicted with cataracts". And Tobias is just like "oh, ok". Now Tobias is supposed to marry someone, and Raphael says he should marry Sarah, because they're distant relatives. And Tobias is like "Uh... the last seven husbands of this lady were killed by demons before they could have intercourse" and then Raphael says, "Well yeah, but we just so happen to have the liver and heart of this fish which will get rid of the demon".

And so yeah, basically the story goes along... Sarah's demon is expelled, Tobit's blindness is cured, and Raphael reveals that he's actually an angel answering both of their prayers.

So I think it's very funny, especially how slow on the uptake Tobias is. It's cool to consider how many times angels may have helped us, even without us knowing it. And how hilarious they must find human nature. It's a perfect example of the role of the angels in aiding us, and why we should pray to the angels for help.

Incidentally, my guardian angel is named Tobit.

So that's Raphael's story. I tried to bring that whole deal into the symbolism in this picture. There's Raphael, disguised as a traveler, sent from heaven. At the top are Sarah and Tobias, whom he helped to bring together. In the four corners, it's a bit hard to see, there are fish symbols.

St. Raphael is the patron of a bunch of things. He's a good saint to pray for if you're sick (especially if you have eye problems!), and he's also the patron of travelers and engaged couples. His name means "Medicine of God" in Hebrew.

I did this in pencil, then inked it, then colored it over the course of a long time with watercolors. Thanks to my sister for posing for me as a model for this.

So there you have it.

Prayer to St. Raphael
Glorious Archangel St. Raphael, great prince of the heavenly court, you are illustrious for your gifts of wisdom and grace. You are a guide of those who journey by land or sea or air, consoler of the afflicted, and refuge of sinners. I beg you, assist me in all my needs and in all the sufferings of this life, as once you helped the young Tobias on his travels. Because you are the "medicine of God," I humbly pray you to heal the many infirmities of my soul and the ills that afflict my body. I especially ask of you the favor (name your request) and the great grace of purity to prepare me to be the temple of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

I love the idea of obscuring his face with the cloak!

Very lovely. I'm always so ecstatic to find wonderful traditional artists on deviantArt.

I guess I never really thought of looking up religious artwork on dA. I was recently at a weekend long religious retreat, and one of the discussion topics one of the days was Saints. I have a whole litany of Saints I consider my personal "patrons" but this experience I had at the retreat really made me want to draw and paint my patron saints. I have a charcoal drawing of Maximilian Kolbe up on this site so far.

But I'm getting sidetracked. Raphael. Wonderfully obscure and bizarre Raphael. My interest in him comes from a very good friend of mine telling me about him. I read a little bit of Tobit, and you're right, its a delightfully weird story. Tobias: "Oh, okay." XDĀ

This friend-- Raphael is one of his personal patrons, as Michael the Archangel is one of mine. He even took the Confirmation name Raphael because he admires him so much, for varying reasons. I had just finished writing a prayer request for him when I found this piece. Its ironic, or maybe just appropriate. You see this friend, he's a wonderful musician. He wants to perform in an orchestra one day. But recently he's been having these tremors and muscle spasms in his hands and arms. Its been going on for awhile and he's deathly afraid that he's going to lose the function of his hands, and thus, his dream as a musician.

I had forgotten that Raphael is the patron of healing. I think I'm going to remind this friend of that. I've been praying for him and encouraging him to pray. He's the one who rekindled my faith after a long bout of indifference.Ā

Thank you for this beautiful piece, and what you wrote about St. Raphael. I think I was meant to find it. Its given me hope.Ā

And P.S. My Guardian Angel's name is Michael Ā

Love this picture. It shows how angels are more than just cure girly people with wings.

And Tobit is one of the best books of the Bible. Officially. And Raphael is too cool for words. You captured his... well, disguise, very well in this picture. And the way his halo is like a stained glass window is too cool.

Haha, thanks a lot.

This is true. It's a very cool book. If you want to get into it even more, try finding John Paul II's meditations on Tobit as part of his Theology of the Body, very profound stuff.

Yeah, I am happy how that halo turned out, I think it's a cool idea.

Yes, it is amazingly interesting. Shortly afterwards, St. Michael also makes himself a part of my life. Apparently, I'm soaring on the wings of angels. Lol!

St. Raphael is my guardian and patron saint. Raphael is an ornery fellow, and Tobit only proves it.

Who-ah! Really going for the top there, aren't you? Nice! I honestly didn't know you could have had more than one, but it's probably just as well because I'd have had too many.

Same for me! I was inspired by the Ecclesiastes, "Better a good name than costly oil." (Ecc 7:1). We are encouraged to aim for holiness and sainthood, right? So in Heaven, we will become saints and will be like the angels. Because God sent three angels to me, I decided to adopt three names so as to remind myself to strive for perfection in Catholic Christian virtues. What matters is that we really love God with all our heart, mind and strength. Anyway, I wish you blessed feast day of St Anselm! God bless!

I like the adaptation of the story of Tobias in your artist's comments! I like how Tobias's and Sarah's hands are not quite touching, it reminds me of how the demon was blocking her from married life. I also like the sky-lights behind the figure of Raphael. I do not like haggardness of the angel's face in this picture; it strikes me more as the face of a man outside of Grace than that of an Angel of the Lord. I do like the Angel's halo and the arch over his head.

Thank you very much. The book of Tobit one of my favorite books of the bible.

Well I wasn't really going for haggardness, more just mysteriously shrouded.

Thanks for your comment.

I know, I love it. Totally epic. Raphael is an awesome guy. Are you not Catholic then? Because in the Catholic Church, we don't consider it apochrypha but Scripture.

I converted to Catholicism from protestantism this year so I had never come across the apocrypha before until my priest presented me with a catholic bible. I just call it the apocrypha to distinguish the lost books from the king james bible.

I think I'll ask him what his name is sometime.

And you are most welcome. ^^

Well, it's probably not his ACTUAL name. But I don't see anything wrong with giving them a name, or better yet having them tell you what they want to be named. We're supposed to have a close relationship with our guardian angels. It's not too "human" to give someone a name. That's silly.

This looks even more gorgeous and rich on our new HD screen. Raphael's halo looks like the rose window from the Strasbourg Cathedral in France. I'm sure this dazzling in life with all that gold ink on it. Really laying it on thick, eh? Imitation is the greatest form of flattery, so I suppose I'm flattered. Really, all jesting aside though, this looks really gorgeous with all that stained glass, and all those bright vivid colors. And I'm glad that background idea worked out. It looks great, especially with the stars and everything. The sun looks a bit...too flaming, if you know what I mean. Like the earth is exploding in a nuclear blast, but it also looks very cool. For whatever reason, I always imagine Raphael as very Irish, as in, lots of flaming red hair, gold and green garments and the whole Gaelic shabang.

Is it just me, or does Tobias look a bit old?

Towards the top though, on the stained glass, it looks like you forgot to ink in your little design on the green glass.

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Aodhagain In reply to Theophilia [2011-05-29 17:50:25 +0000 UTC]

Well, I'm flattered! I think it's an absolutely lousy scan, and it's so much better in real life. Thanks for adding it to your collection!

"Raphael's halo looks like the rose window from the Strasbourg Cathedral in France."

Ahem. Could be, could be.

The background idea did work out marvelously, that's the best part of this in my opinion. The earth is of course due to explode in a nuclear blast, because we're fighting with nuclear weapons. [link]

Ok, as for Raphael... you know, I concur. I think I should have done this in green. The name Raphael to me is more read, but red doesn't quite fit with him. He's much more green and Gaelic. I totally agree with that, and I think it's weird that you say that, but it must be because our minds pretty much think along exactly the same lines most of the time.

Tobias is a bit old looking, I'm not totally happy with how he turned out. Or Sarah for that matter. My sister actually thought it was Mary and Joseph at the top.

Oh yes, I see that bit. I noticed it when I was going over it, but forgot to go back an ink it. Good call.

Well, I'm very glad you like it!
