I said I was going to redesign this public domain superhero, and I have!

I previously drew The Moth's original design(s) here: www.deviantart.com/aotearoa-ge… I also talked about the character and his very brief run in the comics scene, so check it out if you want more context.

The idea I'm going for is that he's a young hero, trying to find his place in the world. So instead of a traditional hero costume, I went for a more causal look with colours taken from the first iteration of his original outfit. The sleeveless hoodie is a callback to his cowl/swimcap that he wore in all four outfits.

A thing that bothered me about the original designs is that only one of them included antennae. If a character is themed around an insect (any kind of insect), they HAVE to have antennae; it's the law! So, of course I included some fluffy moth antennae as well as adding some details to his wings so that they don't look boring.

Overall, I think he came out great! I love this guy so much, that as I was redesigning him I wanted to write some stories with him. One thing I neglected to mention about the Original Moth, is that throughout his run, he was never given a backstory. No secret identity, no close circle of friends/family, nothing. It was never even clear as to how he was able to fly, whether his wings are organic or artificial. But I feel that can give anyone interested in reviving the character more creative freedom. So, I plan to give him the backstory he deserves, and even expand on his power set a little so that he is not limited to just his ability to fly. But of course it's still in development as I write this, so it'll take a while before I can even put his story to words. At least I have the motivation to work on this character further, so stay tuned.
