I'm curious about the practicality of German WW2 webbing and mag pouches. Comfortable? Secure? How does the placement and angle of the mag pouches (Which is much more notable for the MP40 pouches) affect mobility and speed of reload? How does it compare to a modern plate carrier? Sorry for the wall of questions, but I'm curious.

Honestly - it sucks. German leather and webbing gear is very impractical. The MP44 pouches are huge and bulky and not secure at all. They'll annoy you when you try to get on your knees, that's why they're sometimes seen on the side or back of the soldier. I don't own any modern gear nor am I in the military, but I'm pretty sure it's much more comfortable and practical. The German system consist of a long, thin leather belt where you'll store all of your equipment and pouches and the Y-straps. It will rattle around like crazy. Speed of reload is pretty low, but that wasn't the priority during the war.
