Description ***Edit: Skull Kid is not for sale and I am not taking commissions at this time! Sorry!

***Edit 2: Thanks so much for the DD and for all the lovely comments and favs!

***Edit 3: Sorry, but I don't have a pattern for Skull Kid!  He was done free-hand because the directions were too complex to write out.  The only patterns I have are available in the "Patterns" folder of my gallery.

"You've met with a terrible fate haven't you?" -Happy mask salesman

Skull Kid is approximately 18" tall, several inches taller with the hat

So, this is my pride and joy that I've been working on for a few weeks, many long hours a day. He does have wire support because I wanted him to be poseable, including his darn fingers. His mask is also removable! The mask details and Skull Kid's face are needle-felted because I wanted them to REALLY stand out. The face is one of the more important things to me, which is why I usually make eyes and such out of felt, or as of late, needle-felting. And plus I can't embroider.. Am I the only one who has problems controlling where the thread stays in crocheted works?? ._. Whatever the case, I seem to suck at embroidering, while needle-felting makes me happy because the results are much better for me.

The Legend of Zelda series has got to be my favorite game series of all time. I've been intending to make some of the characters from the games, but I waited it out because I wanted to improve my crocheting skills before giving it a shot. Definitely have to do justice to the characters of the greatest series ever! As I've said before, I chose to make Skull Kid first because:

1. He doesn't have a human face, which I'm not quite ready to try yet, but I still get to ease into making something with a humanoid form
2. Majora's mask is insanely cool

I hope you guys like how he turned out! I definitely gave it my best effort!

This is actually the best crochet thing I've ever seen. I'm in awe and wish I had skills like yours. So far I am only able to make things with a pattern and I don't really know how to get started in creating my own.

WOW!! You have crocheted an amazing piece of art! When I saw this, I thought, "I would surely like to make one for my grandson and wouldn't he be so surprised!." He loves Zelda!  I did a Tunisian Legend of Zelda Triforce pillow last Christmas for him and a Jack Harkness doll...of course, I added my own extra details to make them special for him. Your piece would stretch my skills, which is what I am always looking to do....makes it more exciting and interesting...for me. If you wouldn't mind my asking...what size hook did you use?  I was wondering the circumference and length of his head, also, his chest.  I'm really inspired by your creation and I'm going to do one for my grandson. Just hoping it will turn out even half as nice as yours. Thank you, so much, for sharing with all of us.....

Thanks!  I'm glad you like him!  I used sizes E and F hooks interchangeably.  I don't remember which hook for which parts specifically, but they're pretty close in size so it shouldn't make a huge difference.  I don't have a tape measure on hand, but his head is about 5 inches in diameter and his chest is about the same or slightly less in width.  Sorry about how vague that is, but I hope it helps a little.

I'd love to see him when you're all done! Best of luck!

Thank you for getting back to me.  The info was very helpful and gives me an idea on how large the one you did is, outside of the fact he is 18 inches tall.  I have gotten my needle felting supplies and I'm thinking that is where I am going to be the most nervous!   I'll try to get a picture taken....but, don't hold your breath (a little joke there), because I'm sure I will be slower than you were making him.  I have the head and most of his body finished, next to tackle arms, hands, legs and feet.  I'm a typical crocheter and have several projects going at the same time...lol

Really love this one! where did you bought the yarn? If you are okay wih it i want to give it a try too! and the needle felting how did you do that? with the same yarn? keep up the good work

aphid777 In reply to lionfromaugust [2014-02-08 21:36:31 +0000 UTC]

I buy most of my yarn from Walmart because I'm an in-debt grad student  If you search "needle felting" on Youtube, there are a lot of tutorials available.  I used roving wool to needle felt directly onto the surface of the crocheted work.

After looking through 9 pages I gave up trying to see if someone asked this question before so I do apologize if someone did. Is there a pattern up for purchase? I would love to make one for my collection. I only ask this because you have stated that he is not for sale.

I really wish I had a pattern to share.  So many people have asked, but he got really complicated as I was working so I gave up and ended up free-handing most of it.  If you have any specific questions on construction though, I can try to help you out to the best of my abilities.  Sorry again about that

Thank you so much!  I really wish I had a pattern for this guy  I honestly tried to write one, but things got chaotic quickly and I ended up winging a lot of things..  I can give you a general description on how I did certain parts if you have any specific questions.

I was wondering one thing. How did you do the eyes on the mask and the mouth and eyes on the face? Did you use fleece and felted it
