It depicts a hypothetical engagement in Greco-Bactria between Diodotus I Soter vs. the Seleucids when he asserted independence from their rule in the mid 3rd century BC. For the historical context I just used wikipedia (This is a pretty obscure episode after all.) For the arms and armor I used Peter Connolly's Greece and Rome at War and John Warry's Warfare in the Classical World, as well as photo reference of archaeological finds and reenactors depicting this period.
