Description Hardest part of the drawing: Thinking of a freaking Title for it.

This is the first time I've ever drawn rainbow dash.. and i think i shouldn't have drawn the ponytail on her. It was a last minute decision and well... i regret it.

Should I erase the ponytail and draw her mane as per usual and re-upload? (please write in the comments what you think)
I'd still have this one in the gallery, but in scraps or something.

I think the ponytail in this is just too far out and looks out of place, so much out of place that she looks a bit like a chicke- i mean Scootaloo
Also, I was experimenting with hair highlights, and mainly the eyelids ( i have no clue how to properly add in eyelids for that extra affect)
I also really like and want to draw cartoony stuff, but all I know is this type of drawing.. and i bet its the other way around for others hahah

I actually like the pony tail. You don't see it very often, so when you do, it's nice. I'd definitely keep it =].

Your drawings keep getting better and better, AppleBeard! I absolutely love the technique you used on her eyes, they look positively luminous and very beautiful.

(In my opinion, the ponytail suits her- but it's your drawing and you can do whatever you'd like )

Your pencil-work never ceases to amaze! I'm not sure why you regret the addition of the ponytail as I find that it sets this drawing apart from most others of Rainbow Dash, making it far more unique and eye-catching. The sheen on her hair is a definite improvement, giving a certain 3D feel to it. The addition of eyelids was a stroke of inspiration, in my opinion. I think I prefer the grey circles inside her eyes to the distinct white ones you've done before, though I did notice that the grey circles in her right eye are darker than the left. Speaking of darker, her left eyebrow is a tad darker than the right, but the eyebrows themselves are excellent. I'd still recommend shading the edge of her teeth by her cheek a bit to add a little depth. I'd also put a shadow on her ponytail behind her ear to show depth there as well (I really love that fluffy ear, by the way). Her expression is fantastic and I admire the fact that you're constantly trying new things to improve. You have my respect, Applebeard!

thanks a bunch for your support Cloudchaser.
yeah.. the ponytail I thought would add a twist to another one of my boring drawings (seriously, there is almost zero action/movement going on with most of my drawings). someone pointed out that the ponytail is too small and needed to be larger, and I think that going big with the hair will definitely add to the drawing. As for the darker spots and stuff, the lighting in which I draw in is really only bright on one side
but one thing that i struggle with is how dark should I shade her coat, I seem to be going too light?

Always happy to lend a helping hand, especially when I'm rewarded with that adorable Rainbow Dash face! I'm not sure about the ponytail being too small but I won't argue with you if you choose to make their hair bigger, as long as you don't increase the size to ridiculous proportions that make the drawing seem lopsided or awkward. I see what you mean about the lighting, so I'll try not to bring that up again if I can help it. Personally, I would have shaded Rainbow Dash's coat a little darker, but I don't want to force you to try shading their faces and chests until you have some experience shading open spaces evenly and are comfortable doing so. Unfortunately, Twilight and Rainbow Dash's coats are dark enough that they look a tad odd without the darker shading (possibly Pinkie Pie, too). Keep in mind that these are just my humble thoughts. I'll leave the decision to shade their coats up to you.

I think the problem you're having with her mane is that it looks much too small in a ponytail. The ponytail idea itself is a very nice one, but you need to add more motion and body to her mane to make it stand out in that cartoony way.

I really like the shading you did on this, especially in her eyes. Nicely done. What's this, pencil and felt-tip markers?

Another thing I'll point out is that you did a fine job on the eyelids. However, to be show-accurate, they don't really have "lids" per se, just a darker color above their eyes.

Notice here: fc01.deviantart.net/fs71/f/201…

The eye is actually made up of three parts: the lashes themselves, which bow downwards or upwards depending on the expression; the eyebrows, which again, bend either way depending on the look you're going for; and a darker space of blue in the middle. That darker space of blue is supposed to be the "lid", but honestly I like your way better.

Thanks a bunch! So cool to know that you liked how I did the eyelids.
Yeah you are right, I should have drawn a bigger, possibly even exaggerated ponytail then what I drew, I will remember that for next time!
And to answer your question; this drawing is done entirely with Faber-Castell pencils I've found lying around the house, I haven't even tried drawing with a pen...yet
Also, I appreciate the time you took to comment on my drawing, and even having a link to show me what you were talking about was great!

You're very welcome.

When it comes to manes and tails, that's where you can really exaggerate things, because their unique styles each have so much fluffiness and life. Manes and tails are where the personality of each pony can really come through in a permanent way.

Ooh, you have actual drawing pencils. I'm curious as to how they work for you. I use old mechanical pencils that I can pick up at my college gift shop for a buck, lol. Drawing with a pen is tricky, because...haha, no eraser. I generally use a felt-tip pen or even a fine-tipped Sharpie for inking; solidifying the edges can really loosen you up, shading-wise.

Again, you're very welcome. I like leaving critique on people's artwork, it helps both of us improve and I like seeing lovely artwork around me. ^^ Which your artwork certainly is.
