Okay, so seeing as I'm doing a bunch of comics on Wicked, I figured why not Phantom, too? Besides, I have way more beefs with the '04 movie then I ever will with Wicked.First off, I HATE EMMY ROSSUM!
The movie wasn't a total trainwreck, yes I know Gerard Butler cant sing all that well, but at least he gave some emotion! Gawd, damnit Emmy! I know Christine is all spaced out, but your performance was aweful! It was so one-dimensional. She didn't even bother with other emotions! It was just 'Wuuuuhst going oooon?' throughout the entire movie! Like she was a stoner!!
On to the piece. I think it'll help you understand better if I told you the specific moments I was capturing in these (extremely accurate) pictures.
1- Sad Christine: "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again", the entire song.
2- "Angry Christine": "Down Once More" When she "confronts" her kidnapper ("Have you gorged yourself at last in your lust for blood?")
3- "Scared Shitlss Christine": "Masquerade" When the phantom appears ("Your chains are still mine!")
4- "Happy Christine": "All I Ask of You", the entire song.

I love the 2004 movie (because it's what got me into POTO), but I know it still has a lot of flaws. But it is true; Emmy's expressions don't change much at all throughout the film. I didn't really notice that until I saw this. What I have noticed, however, is that she never closes her mouth. Literally, though - it's always gaping open a little. In every single scene. Personally, my mouth would always be dry if I did that xD Whenever I have cold (or allergies), and I have to breathe out of my mouth because my nose decided to take the day off, I always refer to it as "pulling-a-Christine" move. xD

I'm wondering if her looking like a stoner throughout the movie was because of the directing. Looking at her other movies and expression of horror in the final lair, I think that she was certainly capable of more emotion. Plus (again, I don't know if it was the directing, or her interpretation of Christine), I think the movie was trying to show her more vulnerable/innocent side. Theatre also needs extreme facial expressions so people in the back can see them better, but in the movies, it just looks cheesy.

This = win.
I'm so glad to find somebody who isn't a hopelessly devoted Emmy fan who trolls youtube videos of ACTUAL ACTRESSES proclaiming that "OMG Emmy and Gerard were liek, so much bettar than this!"
It makes me sad/

Ha! Loved your comic.
Personally, I loved Emmy's portrayal in Phantom. She wasn't the best (Sierra Boggess, anyone?) But I thought she did a good job. I see where you're coming from though.
Anywho, opinions aside your comic was awesome (keep it up!) and I respect your opinion totally.
Thanks!

She was really awful in the movie! Not only her (atrocious) acting, but her singing is nowhere near the Christine level. Her voice is okay, but her technique is terrible considering she was supposed to be portraying an OPERA SINGER! LOL I'm done raging XD I love this comic! It's adorable.

You have to keep in mind that they made the movie to suit the modern eye. If everyone sang opera style, it would not have appealed as much to new and young viewers.

I completely agree with you. Plus, her voice wasn't really that good. If you watch any onstage version of "Phantom," the Christine's voice completely blows Emmy's out of the water. The one redeeming quality of the movie was the hilarious Carlotta.

I totally disagree with you.
In my opinion her creation of Christine was perfect.
A stoner? Ofcourse! We can even say so, that the Phantom's music was like drugs to her, she was falling into some trance, every time she was near Phantom.
I think it proves that somewhere inside she loved him deeply. But there was also Raoul, so she didn't really know exactly what is it that she feels inside towords them two.
2. - "Angry Christine" You wanted her to what, throw lightinings into Phantom?
She was angry, but also half-terrified, and above all - Christine is an extremly gentle person, so even in anger she kept her delicacy. That only proves how soft and pure her soul is!!
3. She wasn't scared there in Masquerade! That was a part of Phantom's "magic" that he made her fall into some kind of trance, whenever he was near to her.
When he showes up at the end of Masquerade everyone is frightened, but not Christine - She's in love. She's in heaven when she sees him. She's delighted to see him. That's a part of his power over her.
4. She loved Roul, and she loved Phantom too ( or the magic that he was making by his music) When she sings "All I Ask of You" she's still unsure where she should place her feelings, ( what we can see especially in the beginnig of this song) That's why. She's lost and confused.
- That's my point of view. Sorry if I said something wrong or sth, but maybe you would change your thoughts of Emmy? Anyway the picture is funny ^^ It reminds me of those comics with Snoopy dog!
Cheers

Oh heck no. Did you just insult Emmy Rossum????
Lol. I love Emmy Rossum to pieces. She is my idol and one of my favorite actresses, and the 2004 rendition of Phantom of the Opera is one of my favorite movies ever. I love the music as well as the acting, and I thought that Emmy did a wonderful job conveying emotion. But still, this comic cracked me up, even though I don't agree with it.

I noticed that when she said. " Tears of hate" She actually looked KINDA mad. That was most likely the most emotion she gave on the whole movie.

I totally agree with you. I really didn't like Emmy Rossum in that film D:
Strangely enough I did something like this with Zac Efron when I got bored in a science lesson. Because lets face it, he only has one facial expression. -.-

You know, you're right about Zac Efron, but oddly enough... I kinda liked him in Hairspray D: (At least a bit of one-dimensionality works with a character like Link)
