It says even in the game that Sein witnessed the Spirit Tree when it was just a sprout. Meaning Spirits existed before the tree as well.

yes, I decided that backgrounds should be fully painted. It seperates them better, and I feel like I have more freedom too

Oh they are. I have several hundred images saved onto my phone and computer for environment inspirations, but it'll take me a while to get used to drawing backgrounds. x-x I'll get there eventually!
