Description This is it, this is the big one! Okay, not exactly my life's work, but an early look at my Delorean game-spec model I've been working on for several weeks now for a total of probably 8+ hours already. I'm in the process of working on the interior, plus (with only a few decent references) I've spent a lot of that time spinning the model around and tweaking it's shape to obsessive perfection.

That's not to say it isn't still rough as a badger. It needs a great many more details and, of course, textures. But it does only come in at a lightweight 2,000 polys, which is looking good for possible game usage.

I plan to make a total of 4 variants: the original DMC-12 car, and the 3 Back to the Future time machine versions (Nuclear, Flying & 50s Tires). This will be done much like the original prop; by taking a finished DMC-12 and ripping certain components off then sticking new ones on, so they're all based on a common model.

Rendered with a quick bung-in Light-tracer in 3D Studio Max; 2,000 polys approx. No textures.

'Delorean' is contested copyright, so I will just say that it's not mine.

Looking very professional!

Make sure you don't leave any unneeded polys on the back of the seats etc. where they won't be seen!

How are you going to approach making the UV map?

Ta, bud

Yeah, been doing some optimisation as I go (although sparingly; I'm bad for optimising too early sometimes and you can never be sure what you might need later, lol)

As for the UV Unwrap, I'm thinking a 1024 map for the wheels, 2x 2048 maps for the base model (interior and exterior) and another 2048 map for each variant's parts. Although those might be halved in-game depending on what I use it for (but I've always got the hi-res versions). The texture itself is going to be challenging, but I aim to draw everything from scratch.

Right now I'm planning to put it into a recent driving game of some description, but eventually it will form part of an experimental time-travel simulator. Which is almost as crazy as it sounds!

Phew... Aaah, I can't suppress this feeling of inadequacy I get when I see your work.

With the small amount of references you have, I'm sure you'll create something amazing. :'3 I feel ridiculous for never having asked this, but are you currently working on a video game? X'3

Aww, thanks Terra!

Yep, I'm actually working on a couple of em. I'm not totally sure where this fits in yet; I might make it into an extra car for some driving game, but eventually I'd like to use it for an experimental game project

woohoo, that's awesome! i wish i could do that. >w<

love to see it in action when it's done. like an animation/movie clip on flash or something xD

perhaps get some led lights in there and some chrome plating 8D (doesn't really know what i'm talking about, just guessing stuffs, hehe)

Thanks

Yeah, either a video or something you can actually play yourself, eventually.

Lights and other details will come with the textures, wait till ya see it with those on and it'll actually look like a proper car! Whoo ^_^

maybe just a journal with a youtube link. that works too. lol~ have an estimate of how long 'til it's done?

Hmmn, I'm hoping within the next 2-3 months... but it all depends and there's lots to be done!

man, i wanna learn how to model in 3d. i know very little in using Blender. 3dsmax, i don't have.

Yeah I love working in 3D! Blender's a good program from what I've heard; I've only really used Max though. Going from one 3D program to another is incredibly tough, but they all have their particular strengths.

i'd like some kind of tutor to the basics of 3d modelling and theory. i feel like i'm lacking in these and i'm going too far deep into the advanced stuff of which i just can't truly understand. ><

Hey, maybe I'll do an Absolute Beginner's 3D Max tutorial or something ;D

Problem is, 3D programs often work quite different fundamentally...

if i could get my hands on 3dsmax too. lol --i think i would want to stick with blender, though i wouldn't not give 3dsmax a try. @__@

nice work though. pretty cool

The way I see it, if you're gonna make a time machine for your 3D art portfolio, why not do it with some style...? ^_^

And thanks!
