Description
before assisting others" - Airplane safety cardwhelp, a better picture. I made it look all fancy and stuff but the four pencils on the pic are literally the only (quality) pencils I own. had to compromise the reference pic quite a bit so it fit for the colours I had.

So first off, this is beautiful. The fact you only used 4 pencils to do this is very impressive. The subtle use of bits of cooler tones really breathes life into this picture. I feel you used just the right amount of it to make an impression on the person, without it being overpowering to the piece given the context of the title. The smoking effect is beautifully done. I can also tell that you put a lot of study into your reference from how realistic the muscle structure is while still taking enough artist liberty to make the color choices work. My only real point of possible improvement I could see on this, would be doing something to help the piece feel more balanced over all. Looking at this picture I feel like the left side is more heavy feeling than the right. I feel like a half circle shape, possibly of a darker color starting around the eye line and going to the wrist would make it feel more balanced as a silhouette, along with making the image it it's lighter tone stand out more in contrast. Doing this I think would also help make the person in the piece feel more isolated to the viewer. That's my only real point I could see of improvement for this piece. Once again, beautifully done.

wow, thank you so much for the in-depth critique! I didn't notice it before you pointed it out, but you're definitely right when mentioning that the left side is more "heavy".
I think my description was a bit misleading: I didn't ONLY use four pencils, but it was the only pencils that were of good quality (Fabercastell Polychromos). I did use a few other colours from the brand Crayola.
I will keep your advice in mind when I re-draw this again sometime (with my new set of 24 polychromos )

Well, that's why we ask for input from a fresh set of eyes from time to time. I'm glad that the critique was well received. Even if you used more than four pencils and some of them were crayola, it doesn't change how beautiful this piece is. Remember it's the artist that determines the art, not the quality of the tools, those just help make things easier. Let me know when you redraw this so I can see the end result.
