Dooooode if the neverending story was dali, then this one is DALI π: 0 β©: 1
You almost fooled me there! Its so similar yet vastly different.
Whats the orange thing on the horse's neck?
aquadrop In reply to ICworld [2007-02-05 18:57:25 +0000 UTC]
Firstofall: many thanks for comparing me to my absolute myth...I could not ask for more!
Secondof all ...
Well,the orange thing.
It is a kind of energetic nucleus, not actually flesh, but more something like the underlying energy of the living stone which liquifies and turns around the centre of this picture. In fact, you may see it's like it was illuminated from inside (can u?).

Hmmmm now that you mentioned it, it DOES look like the light is coming from the inside. At first glance it looked like a giant pimple
How did you achieve the "grainy" look in the sky?
Also, what does that orange tooth represent?
I wish i could paint shading that realistically . . . (well i can but i take FOREVER because i keep making mistakes)
Were you born with this "skill" or did you teach yourself by practicing? This isn't acrylic is it?

Pimple?!? er... damn google translator... what is a pimple?
The grainy look was not intentional, it comes from using soft pastels (pencils, dunno the exact term in english, wood sticks with an inner stick of color) on paper: the grain is given by the softness of the pastel, the grain of paper - this was very smooth though-, and the speed at which you trace lines on it.
I think nobody is born with the ability of doing things, there are just people that discover a kind of natural ease in doing some things. As u said, I taught myself by tring, rubbing, redrawing one million times, until I was (almost) satisfied. It was very frustrating, but worth all the effort.
The fact you can shade realistically should make you happy! DO IT! Speed will come after trying many times!

Lolz google bad for translation! pimples (aka zits) are those things that teenagers get on their faces when they go through puberty and you squish them and white puss comes out
I use a free English - English dictionary called WordWeb - it says "A small inflamed elevation of the skin; a pustule or papule; common symptom in acne"
Me born in Romania but me live in New Zealand!
And i thought this whole piece was done with a brush and paint . . . I've had the chance to use pastels in art class but i'm one of those people who don't like to get their hands dirty I never liked smudging with the finger, dunno why.
The truth is, i find pencil shading way easier than using a paintbrush.
Thanks for the motivation - that is one thing that i rarely have

I always liked working hard

holy! so the only thing you used to shade this whole masterpiece is the tip of your pastels?

Yes i believed you i just had to make sure. Thats great - you must have a huge set of pastels eh ? Still - it would be great to see something like this done with a paintbrush and acrylics! What size is this "drawing"?

50x70 cm (height x width obviously) on Fabriano FA4 paper. To tell you the truth, I think I used no more than...huh...15-20 different pastels. I think I've got 50 or so...

It's very important when something you do inspires some other, it's one of the best reasons to make art...

In fact. I have a manic admiration for Salvador Dalì, and in a few days I'll visit Museu Dalì I can't believe it...

Wow! Usually I paint unconscious images, this confirms the fact that the black thing in the sky is something lying in the collective memory (or something like this)
