I do prefer to draw without references, not always easy though. It's taken about 7 yrs of serious drawing to get them to look okay without references. Sometimes if I feel stuck in a drawing the best thing I can do is find a picture I like and reproduce it with pencil or photoshop. After doing something like that I feel better about my artistic abilities, lol.

I really like how this turned out 
oh and I actually like the white background. It brings out Kasatka really well and it creates more contrast between foreground and background.
If you give the drawing a complex background, it's going to be way to overdone and the focus on Kasatka will dissapear. It's the killer whale that's stealing the show and not the background xD
