Description
EDIT #2: So I've been away from DA for a couple of months and I come back to find my inbox chock-full of messages. It took me a few moments to realise this was due to this image receiving a Daily Deviation! With two weeks of message build ups there's no way I can get through the 2000 or so messages I've received to thank everyone individually, so I wanted to add this edit to do that.
My thanks to everyone who has viewed, fav'ed and watched this image. And extra special thanks to ~ShengDaFlashPRo for the suggestion and ^artofkerem for the feature.
-----------------------------------------
EDIT: I put the original image up on a couple of forms and received some awesome feedback. In particular my thanks to the guys at the DLF (Digital Labourers Federation).
With their advice I've gone ahead and made some fairly drastic changes. Hopefully everyone thinks its for the better
-----------------------------------------
I watched Roger Rabbit a week or so ago for the first time in about 10 years, and the first time since becoming an animator. Seeing some of the animation, particularly in the opening sequence with Baby Herman really inspired me and I've been trying to get a little bit more 'zaney' into my work.
I love some of the facial expressions Roger makes in that movie, so much in fact that this mouth was modelled off a Roger Rabbit drawing.

Oh wow, you're too kind It'd blow my mind if I were to get a DD. But from what I understand you need others to suggest it first...*hint hint*

This is a great image, you did well on giving him some character and his expression is funny and great. Judging by the previous comment you posted, you've spent a fair bit of time on this in post-pro and it paid off... Your work has paid off. I think the DOF is a little too strong but it's not bad, the candle is the focus anyway. Nice work.

Ah very cool! is this a rigged character then? also whats added in post or is it pretty much all Maya?

ArchDragon In reply to Craggie [2009-12-16 22:32:36 +0000 UTC]
Na, never got around to rigging him. I think I've had to go back and remodel a fair bit, especially around the mouth to make him animatable. That said I always had a small animation in mind for him, so I may try and find the time to do it during the holidays.
This is probably the most post production (Photoshop) work I've ever done on a 3D image. The flame and the smoke are Photoshoped in. It's been broken up into quite a few layers to give additional control in post (beauty, AO, foreground, background, several different lights, DOF...I think that's all )
The blue highlight on the side of his face is predominantly photoshoped. I couldn't quite get the desired rim lighting out of Maya.
My problem at the moment is I've only just started using the new render layers in Maya, so I don't know how to get the most out of them yet. With a bit more practice I could probably get enough out of them to get a similar look for an animation.
Wow, what an epic description...um...thanks for the comment

Man that opening sequence was spectacular and it all would have been done with hand painted cels.
Oh right, this picture, well I've commented enough on it while you were creating it to make my opinion clear, I think its neat. Can't wait to see your next thing
