Description This is an old outdated deviation, new 1680x1050 version can be seen here : [link]

"Morrowind is one of my favorite games, it's one of these games wich life can be extended indefinitely thanks to a massive worldwide modding community.

It is difficult for someone who didn't play that game when it was first released to imagine the unbelievable graphical improvements (and let's not even talk about gameplay improvements) that were developed by the fans. From ultra high quality textures to remodeled bodies and visages, one of the most advanced improvement was the release of an utility called MGE (Morrowind Graphic Extender) by Timeslip.
The vanilla game being plagued by one of the worst 3D engine possible, even at the time of its release, the purpose of MGE is to allow your graphical card to actually improve the game in a way that was not possible before, from Oblivion like distant lands viewing to HDR effects.

Basically, despite its old age, Morrowind is a game that is becoming better as computers evolve. It will never be as pretty as the new generation of video games but it will remain one of the deepest and most interesting game ever created. Since I reinstalled it a few weeks ago and I was grabbed by the game once again, I decided to make a few screenshots so that people see what it looks like in 2008. All screenshots use multiple new textures and MGE.

Let's unleash the nostalgia !"

Since the adventure begins in the Bitter Coast, it seems appropriate to show the southwestern towns of Vvardenfell bathed by the morning light as my first screenshot.

(As a side note if these screenshots were to be taken in the original non modified game there would be nothing more than a grey fog as the original viewing distance would be so short than the game would not even be able to display the ground right below the character...)

Yup, it is.

And even with my not so young computer I keep a solid 30 FPS with such a high setting. So it's not just for the show, it's truly meant to be played like that.

Quite a change from the original game where you couldn't see 30 feet away

wow
I didn't even know about this mod before and I love the fact that it makes everything better.

Just now I'm playing through the game and I can't seem to set the preferences of MGE to "beautiful but with at least 100fps". Is there a way to do this? I know it depends on the computer, but I think mine is quite good.
The distance thing sucks up most of the fps right?
So could you please tell me your prefrences?

Actually I think what will eat up the most of your FPS is probably the range of the "near" distance. It's the one where the maximum amount of models will be displayed.

Be sure to use the 3.8 version of MGE btw, you can find it here if you have the older one : [link]

100 FPS in the outside world for a game like Morrowind is asking for quite a lot, I'm already happy with 30 to 40 FPS, that means that at worst I'll go down to 15 FPS. Note that Morrowind itself exclusively use your CPU while MGE do the opposite and use your GPU.

Here are the settings I use :

Draw Distance 20
Blur 1

Distant statics :
Near : 200 / 5
Far : 600 / 10 (I think 400 may not hurt the FPS that much, I'll try it)
Very Far : 800 / 20

Fog above water : 1 / 20
Fog below water : 0 / 5

All water reflections up

I use Vitaly's animated grass, with a density of 50.

Yes I had the right version.
Thx very much. With these settings I got around 15fps, so my gpu must be a bit old.

But I remember that I had from 200 to 300fps before (without MGE). At least that is what Xfire's fps counter showed. But it did work veeeery good. After installing MGE it dropped to 50.
So now I just want to ask if there is a way to uninstall this mod? (without reinstalling the game I mean)

Yup, without MGE you only show a few cells and the game majorly use your CPU, so with a decent rig you reach ridiculously high FPS.

It would require a lot of tinkering in order to keep high FPS with MGE on, so if you simply want to uninstall it check here : [link]

Thx for all the info.
BTW your settings make Morrowind look very appealing to play. Basically it makes it look like an actual predecessor of Oblivion

I'd love to play it like this, but the fps rly bothers me.
So thx again

Thank you.

It's quite an old screenshot, I've only restarted the game a few days ago and I realize a lot of things changed in a year. MGE has been severely improved and future screenshots shall be even better looking.

I just recently got Morrowind installed (again) on my new computer, and I'm still playing it vanilla. XD BUT THIS IS AMAZING. Where can in find the MGE mod?

How are you able to see that far? :S

Wow, I really need to go back to the game a take a look, this is fantastic. So far I like most of your screenshots, don't be so hard on yourself. Put them up anyways and let others decide if they are good or not, you can always take them down later. I'd like to see something from on top of red mountain looking down perhaps. Anything that lets you see iconic locations and the distances between them.

Thanks for the feedback.

I'll try to do a shot from the top of Red Mountain as soon as I'll have the Tamriel Rebuilt map installed so that there will be some land on the horizon instead of just water.

Great idea, I was just thinking how cool it would be with TR installed. I did an exterior or two for them, but it was a long time ago, no idea if they are using it or not.

Archibald-TK In reply to RenegadeDragoonX [2008-01-16 22:08:16 +0000 UTC]

Thank you.

Indeed the game still has a few more years in front of him before people forget about it, at least until we see an Elder Scrolls that will combine the best of Morrowind and Oblivion

I will try to submit new screenshots as time passes, depending on the locations that strike me as beautiful or interesting. But I'm sure I'll be slow at doing so. Whatever I do, I'm always unhappy with my shots so I always end up taking a gazillion before choosing one of them
