RAAAAAAGE BEEEEEEAMFinally done. Three days of work to crank this out.
This happens to me ALL THE FREAKIN' TIME when I get on Wifi. I'll go around crushing the lives of random innocents with R.O.B., then be five seconds from finishing a game and winning by, like, 5 points, then suddenly I'll get DC'd. Sometimes my router is to blame, but other times...
NINTENDO NEEDS MOAR INTERNETS!

My dad told me he was tired of seeing all this Super Mario & video game fanart stuff, and that I should do something of my own... something that could go in the Sunday comics.
So I did.
I've been wanting to start a weekly strip like this, under the title Graphite... so I decided to make this the first. As the title suggests, EVERYTHING in this is done by hand with pencils, except for the colors & glow effects, because you can't color with graphite very well. I wanted to have a warm, rich color scheme to it too, and knew I couldn't get that with scanned Prismacolors or anything... so there ya go.
Screenshot took forever, because I wanted it to be easily recognizable as the game, and I'm a perfectionist like that... it's kind of a shame I had to scrunch it down to fit on the TV. ~ZaxZero and I chatted for a while, thinking up all kinds of funny error messages to put in there, but I ended up sticking to the original. I'll work the good ones we thought of into future comics or something.
**EDIT** I showed this to my dad, and he likes it. Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

Parents should lay off what their kids like to draw. If they knew what art was about, hey wouldn't try to control what their kids like to draw, but no they think everything should be the next Da Vinchi masterpiece or something...

Yeah, perhaps parents have their expectations too high sometimes. I don't believe that's the case with my dad... he has his preferences, but he's not controlling what I draw. He does have high hopes for what I do with my skill, though, and I'm sure he thinks it's a waste to use it all on stuff that I can't claim as my own (fanart). Sure, I can get jobs doing illustration and whatnot, but that's not the same as being able to claim my art - ALL of it - as mine. That's the goal of projects like this.

I wish I could say the same about my dad. He acts like he's trying to be like the way your dad is, but I can tell for sure he's trying to force me into doing something else when I'm perfectly comfortable with what I'm doing already. The man just can't accept that we're totally different people.

No, no, not like that... It was a simple request from my dad. He wanted to see me aim higher than just doing stuff for a narrow audience like hardcore Mario fans - something more professional and easier to appreciate for the general public. I still went with the gamer slant, because I know that the majority of folks on dA are into that - but it's something I agree with him about. I don't want to be stuck doing fanart.

Yeah, I know what you mean... but that doesn't stop me from doing what I like to do. It also doesn't stop me from doing what I know they like to see - things like portraits!
Honestly, I don't expect my parents to start geeking out because I drew some epic cel-shaded deal of the Super Mario crew, or yet another color pencil rendition of Shadow the Hedgehog. That's not what they're into. When you love somebody, you shouldn't have to have identical interests and preferences. That's the beauty of it.
I definitely understand the dread of disapproval - believe me, I've had that hanging over my head as long as I've been drawing. But really, how much of it is in your head? And have you tried drawing what you know that they like to see?
