I'm not the marrying type.

There are many different ways to read this.

Let me clear it up then. While I understand "would waifu" or "would ask you to marry me" and comments along those lines are meant to be complimentary, I personally find them offensive.
Assuming that any woman strives to be "wife material" is archaic. The idea that any woman would automatically be flattered by the fact that someone would deign to marry them is rude at best.

Well if you read it that way, that response is natural. Personally it would have occured to me the last to think of it this way, but then I am in a different position.

Because I can't edit posts on this site, here an addendum.
While it's perfectly understandable to view such compliments in this light given its historic usage, I would argue that nowadays -at the very least the "mai waifu" fraction- is not following the old patriarchic mindset of "only a married woman is a proper woman", but are simply expressing adoration/attraction in a manner that they are acquainted with, as it has been practised before - albeit in a different social context and with different implication;Β or perhaps it actually started with some manga/anima/imageboard I don't know because I don't consume the relevant media, but in this scenario the disconnect would be even greater.
In other words, the association of "waifu" with "she should get married" is not unlike the locally relevant phenomenon of associating "to each their own" with Nazism (it was used as a parole over the doors of KZ Buchenwald). At first glance it makes sense given the historical precedence, but is likely incorrect in many cases - more so because there is Β no widespread social stigma on "waifu" and thus people are more careless about its usage than that parole (which I personally use fairly commonly without any ulterior motives). I suggest a more differentiated approach to such compliments and view them with a sense of presumption of innocence anyway, because that's just proper practise in any situation really.

I have to respectfully disagree.
"To each their own" in itself has no reference to anything offensive. To say that it is upsetting simply because at one time it was used by unsavoury people would mean that most every word in the English language could be taken as such.
The term "wife" and all such words derived from it are not ambiguous at all. They are used to refer to a married woman.
As I said, I understand that they are meant as a compliment. I, however, find it impossible to take it as such. The assumption that I will find a greater sense of worth in knowing someone - particularly some stranger on the internet - wanted to be married to me is degrading.

Well it was obviously the German pendant. And well, that's kind of true actually. Words have no innate meaning, they are created by us and they are given meaning by us, and more often enough this meaning is modified, be it by directly changing the meaning or giving the meaning a different purpose - which sounds kind of weird.
Well it's not meant literally. I don't think he would marry you based on this one picture, that would be extraordinarily daft of him. It's used to convey the idea that you're pretty adorable (you're magnitudes more adorable in that blue dress in the beginning of the PG transformation video though).
But to each their own I guess.

Not to enter into a private party, but what tpasu could pithily have said was that we give words context. I don't think it was intended as such but the original comment could easily be taken as a backhanded compliment. Frankly, if you like a photo of a lady it's better to say what you mean.
Me, I think the photo is stunning, or rather, the lady in this particular photo looks stunning in it. She has beauty, depth and clearly, from the comments and replies, intelligence. Plus, she has used the title of one of my favourite songs. Ardella, say it loud and there's music playing, say it softly it's almost like praying, to paraphrase another fine song.
As a comment on all your photos, I'd say that the camera loves you. Warmest regards.

Fair enough, it's more of a compliment that's not trying to be in the same vein as "omg ur so hot".
I just like the picture. Felt like being cute about it.
