Not sure if this matters or not... but for the "color" layers that are set to "multiply"... should those be above the AO and shading layers?

yes it matters
if your color layer is in multiply mode, then it should be above your AO and shadow layer

I think you could make up her eyes like the draw base.

I love how this is basically a painting, but which follows the 3D principles of shading!

I was inspired by Sam Nielson at first! 
my first try was in 2011
and here is the result: 
lol, so much fail, and I stopped.
Then recently Jiyu-Kaze made the AO painting became popular again, so i tried again. I guess this time is a success? lol
