I never saw much of the original Who. I wonder, did they always wear those? Or was that just their equivalent of suit and tie? Actually, I remember one of the more recent episodes, when it showed a flashback of part of the Time War, the Gallifreyan civilians seemed to be in more sensible attire. Shirt and pants for the men, dress (but not overly ornate or "impossible to walk in) for the women. (unless I got my wires crossed with something else)

I have only recently gotten into Doctor Who myself. Started with 11 and have been working my way back. From what I gather the Timelord robes were a symbol of status and station. The military wears something different, for instance (thank goodness), but it seems the high collars were a calling card of the High Council. Frankly, I blame Rassilon.

Those are the collars? For some reason I thought it was a headpiece or something. It may have been inspired by the head-dress worn by the Incan emperors in what's now Peru.

Hmm, interesting, I've never heard of this head-dress. I'm honestly really knew to the Doctor Who series, so I'm probably not the best source of information on it. Still, thanks for mentioning that, Incans, eh? My world just broadened.
