This is lovely, but I feel like theh ips and rib cage are a little off. Maybe it's just me, but I felt I should point it out ^^

I never understood why artists did this. What it it for? Like what do the straight lines mean around the head and all that do?

They're guidelines. Most artists use them to help determine where the facial features are. Body guidelines help make sure the anotomy isn't off.

But how do you know your guidelines aren't off?

Hmm... I guess its mostly common knowledge. Like, the vertical line indicates where the nose should be; you wouldn't want a person with their nose all the way to the side of their head. The horizontal line is where the eyes would be. Your eyes aren't where your mouth is.

For different perspectives the guidelines will shift, but it indicates the same thing; where the nose and eyes are.

For body guidelines, its basically where the spine is.

"Common knowledge' isn't that common for people who aren't artistic.

Maybe I should have phrased it differently. I didn't mean to offend you or anybody else, so I'm sorry if I did.

But anyway, in a nutshell (how I see guidelines anyway)
horizontal lines are used when you want something level. (Ex. Eyes, shoulders, hips)
vertical lines split things in half so the body/face/body part looks symmetrical.

Both kinds of lines are used to help with proportionality.

Lol I think instead of saying that it's common knowledge, it would be more accurate to say that its something that becomes common knowledge. You know its correct because you have learned the proper proportions for faces and how to adjust them, so it's kind of engraved, you don't need references any longer

Yeah, I kinda realized how I worded it after I posted it.
Thanks for the advice, though! ^^/

Ah well that makes it much more easier to understand. I wasn't offended at all although i did notice i sounded like i was.

Thanks for the explanation anyway, whenever i try to draw i just draw whatever without the lines haha

I'm glad it's easier to understand! ^w^

I used to draw without guidelines, too. Then I started using them, and things got a lot more proportional.

je pense que dans un cas comme ça, un logiciel 3D ça aide bien. Comme ça ensuite tu peux tourner le persos sous tous les angles possibles pour voir comment ça fait
