Description
Trying out a scale pattern technique. It's a bit crude, but at least it is fairly consistent. Next step is to work on differences in shading and lighting to make the scales stand out a bit more.EDIT: I changed the scale pattern. The scales are now smaller, and are now facing down. I also added a bit of shading around the legs.

Hello:
Β It' s a good first attempt, I am sure you'll like to refine with every new Drake pic .

Β For what I've seen in other artworks, the shape are downwards from what you have here. Did you make this using an effect? Because one option would be (very messy) to work each part of the body separately.

I can rotate the angle of the scale pattern, either in whole or in part. I didn't use an effect for this. I made a pattern in (roughly) a square shape larger than the drake. Then I posted the pattern in a higher layer, went down to the layer containing the drake, selected outside of the black parts of the drake, then inverted my selection. After than, I went back to the pattern layer with the inverted areas still selected, then deleted the pattern in those areas so that the only part of the pattern left would cover the black skin. It wasn't perfect, and I had to manually erase the pattern in some areas, like the horns and the claws.

Hello:
Β Ohh, so you made that pattern? nice . The only nitpick is that, by looking at other drawings, it should be upside down. Maybe you can also try a smaller size so it will look like tons of scales. But what you did was a vey nice way... of course there always be some evil parts, hehehe, but it works
.

I can flip the entire pattern upside down. I might be able to make it smaller too.

Β You can try and see how it looks.

I made some changes. Is it better now?

Β I like it better specially in the preview as it looks like very detailed .

In the preview? Not up close?

Β Up close too, but I think that for up close fancyness, you might also start experimenting about texturing parts of the Drake as legs and tail are always bending.

I can use different scale textures for different parts.

Β I look forward to see how that turns out, could be great if you like the results.

I imagine it will mean (at first) resizing the current scale pattern and changing its direction in places to go along with the position of the head, tail, etc.

I think the new size is good, maybe you should keep that one. And yeah the better place to start should be the rear legs.

Make the scales smaller there due to the farther distance from the "Camera"?

Β No, I was referring to the firstedit you've made, with smaller scales, looks better and you should keep that size.

I'll keep it as it is, more or less.
