Russian-made Iraqi Air Force Mil Mi-17i Helicopter departs on a test flight at Basrah-COBThe Mi17 (known as the Mi-8MT in Russian service) has the same basic layout and airframe of the Mi-8, but with newer, more powerful 1545kW (2070 shp) Isotov TV3-117VM engines designed for hot/high conditions and an advanced avionics pack. At present the Iraqi Air Force has four machines with more on order. Pilots and aircrew are trained both in the United States and in the UK.
"Hip" was the old NATO codename for this type of aircraft...

Mi-8 (Hip) and Mi-24 (Hind) are both manufactured by the Mil Design Bureau and share the same basic airframe - these are configured for ground-attack, but the type is routinely used as a transport helicopter.

They do, don't they? There's a rather quaint yet purposeful simplicity to Russian aircraft designs that I find particularly appealing...
