Description This is a tutorial, assuming basic knowledge of Photoshop - showing a quick way of shading and lighting.

This is pretty obvious stuff, but a couple of people have asked me about shade, so I thought I'd do this, plus it was fun

I always use a normal brush, taking the colors and just using darker versions of them and doing it like that, with the brush on 5% opacity, tried the burn tool but idk, I should probably try it again.

Yeah, that is often the best way to do it, but this technique is for quick projects.
I wouldn't suggest using a combination of both techniques as the burn tool can be quite intense.

Yeah I tried the burn tool, problem is I had to shade a lightish color and it just didn't do it.

Well instead why not just use the paint brush tool on a very transparent setting like 10-20%.
Select the colour you want to add some shade too with the eye dropper tool, then when the colour pallet comes up select a darker (slightly) version of the colour you want to shade over.
Then using your very transparent brush, on a soft setting. Go over the area gradually until you build up some light shading.
Don't forget to do your shade on a new layer in case you go wrong.

Manic-Fantasies [2012-09-13 13:45:54 +0000 UTC]

What if you colored it on a different medium, and want to shade it using photoshop?
I used an app called ArtRage.

(I literally know nothing about digital art ^_^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

arkaya In reply to Manic-Fantasies [2012-09-21 16:28:08 +0000 UTC]

That's no problem.
I do not know that app but, in theory it should work no prob.
It would obviously work best if you had seperate layers, but you can just go straight on top in PS

I am creating a poster for a stageplay I am doing, and I needed to shade my whale. This was superb! For me, I needed to add one step: Edit > Fade Fill, (and then I could choose opacity) and this allowed more definition of my whale to show through. Thanks much!

Bro, shut up. There is no wrong way to shade.

pcfreak1997 In reply to xXtoastloveXx [2012-09-04 03:03:31 +0000 UTC]

This is a way of shading, actually. It doesn't matter if you do it 'the official way'. It's still shading.

I made this tutorial for photoshop newbies, fair enough if you don't want to use it, but there is no need to be rude.
I know very well how to shade that is why I am commission artist ... check my work/stats before being an idiot.

i don't use photoshop
and are you bashing my artwork?
christ, all i did was voice my opinion
and you have to get all defensive about your art work.
oh my god people like you.

pcfreak1997 In reply to xXtoastloveXx [2012-09-04 03:04:47 +0000 UTC]

But did people want to hear your opinion? No. They didn't. It's the internet. Nobody /cares/ about your opinion, you might as well kick a wall and cry about it, or suck it up and move on.

I concur there are many ways to shade and NONE of them are the wrong way because they praticuly do the god damn same thing
I learnt something from this tutorial and if you already know the "proper way" why are you even searching for tutorials? if that's not stupidity I have no idea what is.
