Description
Sonic Mania is on it's way and later this year Sonic Forces, and I've been wanting to draw classic style versions of my characters since Generations but have been a bit busy with other things til now.

It was strange drawing in the Classic style but in a good way as it was simpler than the usual style so these didn't take as long to sketch. As for their designs I basically took them both back to their early looks (Umbra's single striped shoes, Ruby's elbow length gloves and no jacket) but also smoothed out certain details to make them look younger to fit the "Classic" style (Umbra's hair and chest fur has less spikes, Ruby's pony-tail is shorter and smoother) but I also decided to slightly update a few things like Ruby's weapon. Originally she wielded a grappling hook and rope which she swings around, and nowadays it's a high tech stun pistol with a grapple beam. For Classic Ruby I decided to combine the two and gave her a grapple gun which now that I think about it is quite suitable for the custom character in Sonic Forces.

I may also do this with Lunas and Rej however they would mostly just be a blue version of Classic Knuckles and a slightly chibi version of Rej's junk bot form. Anyway hope everyone has fun when Sonic Mania finally arrives!

UPDATE: And here is the finished pic. I decided to use the same background I've been seeing in Sonic Mania images lately as it suited the Classic style, very retro Sega. I went for thinner lines than I usually do since I thought it suited Classic style better. I'm happy how these two turned out and I wouldn't mind using them in stories someday, kinda like how the comics would retell the old stories of Sonic and his friends during the old days but with some updates. When I first created my characters they were teenagers not much different from what they are now, it's only since Generations that I thought about what if they were younger when they started their adventures? Would be interesting to try.
