This is my first tutorial, so let's just hope that it works. Sorry, it's a massive file.. So yeah, this is just how I do stuff, so hopefully it helps someone.If you see a typo, or grammar error, please let me know. I don't care if it's by note or in a comment. I seem to always miss something when I look over what I wrote..

If you do try this out, I would love to see your result, and your feedback on this technique. ^u^

Hey! So sorry for the late response.
To be honest, I don't remember what my settings were when I did this tutorial, since I had to get a new version of Sai and lost my settings. I think I probably used just the default setting for the copic marker. But definitely play around with it!

I am so sorry for the late response. School has been hectic and draining. ;m;
Do you have a layer under your lineart layer for your colors? Something that I just now realized I didn't actually explain too well was making the "base" layer under the lineart layer after I highlight the area inside my lineart. and then I make layers above this base layer and clip them to it and add other colors in. I hope that makes sense. I'm not the greatest at explaining things.

I absolutely HATE Sai but my copy of Photoshop's stopped working for some reason and I've been put in a situation where there's no alternative. I'm trying to learn it, as much as I can't stand the program but it's ten times harder to use than Photoshop and even this tutorial doesn't help much which is a bit upsetting because it means I'm not going to be able to produce anymore art, and I had an entire comic planned.
I can't work out how to light and shade on this program, the biggest problem is the fact that the magic wand tool just selects the ENTIRE page instead of just selecting the area you click. In Photoshop, the magic wand tool is one of the most important tools for lighting and shading but in Sai, what use is it when you can't just select the parts you want to shade? The paint bucket tool suffers from the same problem as well.

Aww I'm sorry your Photoshop isn't working! I hope you can get it fixed soon! ;A;
This is a super old tutorial, and I don't even use the magic wand tool anymore, because my lineart is much thinner and sketchier than it used to be and it's a huge pain in the butt to get every last pixel highlighted.
For shading and lighting I usually make use of the clipping group and manually put the shading and stuff on that area. If you want to use the magic wand tool you need to be on the same layer as the area that you want to shade/highlight and select it, and then you can get on a different layer and add in your shading and highlighting. I haven't played around with Photoshop much, so I don't know if the magic wand tool works the same way or in a different way. And the same thing goes for the paint bucket, I believe, you have to be on the same layer for it to not paint the entire page.
I hope this helps (and makes any sense at all, since I'm bad at explaining things). And good luck on your comic!

Thank you! The comic's not going so smoothly though. (can't draw the characters in a way that doesn't look like it's being drawn by a five-year-old)
Fortunately, a friend of mine had Photoshop on a disc so I've managed to get back to it sooner than I expected.

i was facing the same problem with the magic wand tool,the solution is easy really.
suppose you drew a character in the middle of the page and its all ust one layer,just select the background from the same layer as the character,and THEN make a new layer.
BOOM

Here's my crayon settings. -->sta.sh/0bdnyvisp1m You can also set the edge hardness to 50 and have a sharper edge but not too sharp and have it look neat. And you can take the density thing off if you want a solid color for your lineart. And you can set the color at a very dark gray, that's almost black too. Hope this helps.

I think so if you get it online.. I got it from a friend... I think it's like $40-ish. It's a lot cheaper than photoshop which will run at least $100, which is why I don't have photoshop.XD

I think it depends on the version of Photoshop. I don't know. I went into Best Buy and saw different versions of Photoshop ranging from over a $100 to $700. It's ridiculous...especially for poor people like me...

Yeah, I don't think I'll ever be able to get photoshop either, unless I win the lottery, but that ain't going to happen. XD
You can get a tablet for much cheaper from monoprice.com . The tablet I use was like $48, and their shipping is pretty fast too. No, it's no Wacom or Bamboo tablet, but it works... XD

i sure like your style and way of doing things i bet there´s quite a few people who can learn from you. Personally i made the mistake of looking at too many tutorials and trying every single one. The result is that i never stuck with one long enough to develop it properly which you did. Sometimes though it strikes me that your highlights are a tad bit too intensive and bright but that might just be me ^^

Aww thanks! ^^ I had done that a lot, but I find one artist's style that I really really really like, and try it in my own way. Moni158's art style is my favorite, so I've been trying to do stuff similar to hers even though I'm nowhere near close to making it as good as hers. --> moni158.deviantart.com/ (It's amazing!!)
Yeah, I've noticed that my lighting's been all little too much lately. It might be time to tweak my style some. XD

yeah i´ve seen her pictures before and her style surely is perfected in her own way. I still don´t quite manage to grasp how she´s even doing it, so many random colors and line creating a perfect picture i want that skill too it´s gona be interesting to see how your style will develop over time

yeah whenever i find a picture or style i like i try to understand what was going on in the artist´s head but with somebody like her i can´t do that...not yet. Maybe if i knew somebody how has a similar style but not as complex yet so you could create your own bridge

Armanie-Zacharias In reply to adoptab-all [2013-11-06 20:35:08 +0000 UTC]
It really depends on what color your light source is. I usually do a light yellow, or a light blue, but I have done a light orange-ish color for the lighting once. (halloween pic)

Armanie-Zacharias In reply to adoptab-all [2013-11-08 03:33:04 +0000 UTC]
Hmmm. Maybe you could do another layer of shading, so you have some sorta dark areas and some really dark areas to compensate for the highlights. I use a really dark purple for the really dark shading sometimes (I use the copic marker set on multiply for this.). You can also do some highlights on a layer above the line art layer if you want the lighting to show a little.
