Description Some months ago, I announced in my journal that I had bought a wacom tablet. Since then, I have almost done nothing. Nothing. I lacked time, motivation, I felt guilty each time I was painting instead of working, + I don't know why but using my tablet kills my backbone... anyway, today I decided enough was enough, my exams are in two days but who cares. So I've been doodling this last hour with my tablet, and here's the result of the last 10 mins: a weapon concept like those you see for MMORPG's like World of Warcraft or Lineage-II.
Hope you'll like it
(I should make more of them, I enjoyed making this one so much!)

fantastic design! I like the dark shading too (did you invert the colors or draw it that dark?) my only criticism is that I can't exactly see the design on the pommel, its just too small, but who cares? its just the pommel the rest is amazing!

I did this several years ago, I had just recieved a tablet and wanted to try my hand at MMO-style weapon concept design. Alas, I never went any further, my computer wasn't strong enough for CG art and then I became too involved with work.
I drew this weapon the way it is, no postwork color manip. The reason the details can't be seen is because I wanted to try to learn how to suggest detail and texture without actually drawing them. Anyway, thanks for the appreciation

Wow hey, didnt know anyone of the western world knew of Lineage II. How'd you come by it? I heard it sorta sucks.

I first heard of it when they were first beta testing it, a girl called Jacinthe (she's on DA too, very talented artist, though not very active) on wc3campaigns was taking part in the beta and she had a sig with a screenshot of her character, I thought the character arts were cool. Then I discovered the art of Juno Jeong, the main concept artist, and thought it was incredible. It was a time when Korean designs were not omnipresent in games so they still looked kindda new, at least to a European like me. So anyway, being a guy and all, I especially fell for the Dark Elf chick designs (loving Dark Elves chick is my small secret sin). I also love their cinematics.
Now, I have of course heard that the game is not that good, at least lots of people say that you can't do anything in it else than killing bots to gain XP, all the time... but then, others say that once you manage to go over that part it's pretty good. Anyway, I think I would have played that one rather than WoW if I didn't know better: being an internet and video game addict already, I have to stay away from MMORPGs at all cost!
So basically, I don't like the game for its gameplay (since I never even tried the demo) but for its concept art, which IMO is reallt great. The only problem is that in general asian designers are too influenced by manga and don't offer enough facial variability: you can either have a cute face or not play. In contrast, most european game designers only let you have ugly faces ^^ , so I should'nt complain, but of late these asian games have tended to look a bit too much like eachother.

Yeah, they really need to work on storyline, and quests. They are forgetting the fundamental concept of games: FUN. They are lacking it, or they think what they made is pretty fun. At least not for me, maybe some hardcore players luv cutting monsters and completing dialogue less stuff.

Speaking of dialogue, I played a RPG Beat 'em up game called Dungeon & Fighter (excuse lame english of my ppl... ) and while they didnt have voiced over dialogues and the entire game was 2D (hey nothing wrong with 2D if its good, eh?) at least the NPCs had about 3 or 4 voiced salutation dialogues when you click on them. Even if they dont have voice overs when they give you quest info and stuff, the few dialogues really added character and life to the characters. They are Anime oriented, but really, voices and music really liven up media stuffs. Some of their salutations gave a hint of what these NPCs are focused on (like one char complains about spiders and such) and you also get a glimpse of what the dungeon may be like (full of spiders?). All salutation voiceovers have the NPC's unique personality inside them. It really livens up the entire world of that game, even if these 2D bitmap raster renders of these NPC's dont have animations. (aside from sparkling and wind on their hair)

SIDENOTE: Speaking of sound, One fallibillity of the movie DeathNote was lack of music, like suspense music in key mystery scenes. (the other major problem was LACK of good story, and camera making things look like a damn jap tv drama... )

PS: The uniqueness of the game is that even though its an RPG, the stages are like Arcade games of the past + skills system in RPG. You put 6 skills into ur hotkey skill slot. Only six, but of course u can have many skills learnt, but only 6 in the hotkey skill slot which you activate using keys a, s, d, f, g, h. Other skills not in the hotkey box must be triggered through typing the right combo keys. So the 6 box limitation encourages ppl to remember simple skill key combos, its like playing mortal kombat or king of fighers and the other likes, u memorize combos and let 'em rip. Cool game concept.

Sure, 2D can be awesome (SC is not really 3D, it's rather isometric false 3D), I loved the first Rayman game and it was all 2D.

Have they already done a Deathnote movie? I read the whole scantranslated series one year ago, it was quite awesome, and I know they are making an anime series, but somehow I don't feel like the story is suited for a movie.

That game concept sounds interesting indeed. The only few rpgs I ever played were Baldur's Gate and a few Zelda... I'm gonna get myself a Wii soon and buy Zelda: Twilight Princess, I played that game on a friend's Wii and it was absolute awesomeness (I actually played non stop from 10 pm to 6 am!)

Deathnote: The movie was out before the anime, i believe , like last year? The anime just kicks the krap out of the movie. And like with most results to reenact a famous manga with real people, they tend to lack taste, and end up looking like some lame TV soap.

You can read all about my rants, i did a full page of it in some forum, but I'd rather tell this secret forum to you thru pm. Ok? Wanna see?

CHOP CHOP!! Yeah, just cuz they had Nunchucks, they beat the krap out of PS3!!! Everyone wants to make games for Wii now!!! Even past games are being remade to fit Wii!! Prince of Persia goes chopchopchopsuey with NuncHucks! PS3 loses in the pricing sector; result of just upgrading already existent features and not trying out new innovations... Nintendo = win.

Speaking of 2D... HAve you heard of Odin Sphere? That game had controversially super awesome 2D renders. IT looked like it was done thru making basic 3d models and animating them, and painting raster 2D over it. But IT WASNT!! Every fluid frame was done from scratch!!! GO watch their trailers... maybe its on youtube too, but i watched it on their official site.

Rayman... ah... good ol' Mr. Dark... I had Rayman Designer's version and spent hours trying to beat the L337 and uber hard maps created by designers. Luved Rayman Plus too. What level did you get to in the original version? I just barely managed to beat the Mountain Boss.

OK, send me a note with the link and I'll pay the forum a visit to look at your "rants" ^^

I've seen the trailers for Odin Sphere on gametrailers.com, they looked awesome indeed. Asian concept artists have a really cool style in general (there's just too much of the same stuff, it's a shame because ||subliminal message --- Wii is made of win ---- end of subliminal message|| that's good stuff but too much kills the magic). Speaking of Viking mythology based games, I'll have to try a game in the Valkyrie Profile series when I have time, I've been told they're great.

Rayman... hmmm, I finished the game, though I had a hard time with Skops, the scorpion boss (last one before Mr Dark). I also had the designer version, created a few levels at the time (basically, I've only ever created levels for Wc2, rayman, Sc and Wc3), but never downloaded maps made by others (I had the slowest internet connexion in the world at the time). My mum also got us the "learn German with Rayman" game, it was ok but not as much fun. Then my younger brothers got Rayman II and III, I really regret not playing them because they were really beautiful, fun and with a very good ambiance, but I was playing other games at the time, and I was in general less interested in 3D platform adventure games.

The only time I watched Skops was from the main menu. Dont touch anything and they'll show you a demonstration like in arcade games, right? stuff like that. I remember seeing Skops being very hard to beat, with the ground falling from the shockwave of its claws, and... frankly, besides the claw banging attack i dont remember.

I didnt like rayman III (i think it was 3) low poly random fantasy stuff aint good without too much humor... Back in rayman one you get detailed 2D expressions of the enemies when get bashed, but in 3D fantasy games made for gamers of all ages, its hard to see that fun violence, esp if its designed to be low poly for the sake of fast gaming.

Oh, and LUV the rayman I music. And the rayman Plus music is quite okay too.

To be honest, i didnt watch the entire odin sphere trailer thing cuz i hate to get spoiled!! I have have walkthrough of it on a korean magazine but i didnt read too much of it in fear of being spoiled I hear the story is at least kinda good.

I'll send you a note

Great concept! And nice job with the tablet!

Is it hard to coordinate on it? I was thinking of getting one, but wasn't sure if it would be difficult to get used to.

Thanks
I'm still not completely used to it, but I'm slowly getting better. Definitely a great improvement over the mouse, I feel using photoshop is way easier than before.

Interesting. Does this weapon hide psycopathical pulsion ?

Armel In reply to Kalkhran [2006-03-10 15:57:15 +0000 UTC]

Well, maybe, yes... although the way I usually get rid of my basic instincts is thru listening to violent music and playing badmington like I was on a battlefield (I don't really cooperate with my team partner (we play 2 vs 2), last time I nearly cut her waist with my bat).

Then, you can draw your bat as a "random weapon) >.<

Very cool, nice details ! The hand-protection thing looks kinda odd, though. It must be because of the shape.
And the design of the blade is really good.

Yeah, there is scarcely enough place for the fingers, considering how big the handle already is (mental note to self: fix that).

Alas, there will be no bigger image. It was really a quick small scale doodle.
