I like the concept...it's nice and original, but at the same time you have to remember if you read the books that a majority of people who consumed spice had no clue it came from sandworms.

Perhaps in the first book...however, during the time of "Children of Dune" and "God Emperor", it's pretty evident. Especially in God Emperor where there are no more sandworms and the only spice that's still around is what Leto II has hoarded and doles out to the various factions.
Besides...sandworms make for a nice mascot.
