Description
I first heard of Pazuzu when I read "The Exorcist". I based this piece on pictures of the bronze casts from 4000BC Mesopotamia. The figure is about 14" tall from an original i sculpted in plastalina. It is cast in hydrostone.Related content

Ah, PAZUZU. (Sorry about that.) Sooo..."input". Okay; What I like about this piece is the slight rounding effect of the casting that in combination with the patina(paint?...an effect of the Hydrostone?) -gives it a realistic feel. As though it was actually handled and cared for for years. Gravitas, if you will. The problem I'm running into with my work is avoiding making it look like a toy. It's like the craft version of the "uncanny valley". With my chests, I'm struggling to avoid making something too shiny, too blemish free, too evenly colored and I can't add materials that seem out of place (plastics, smoothly polished metals, obvious screws) It makes it look like something mass produced. (And as you probably know) THAT is a horrible thing after spending weeks getting that one piece just right. That you knew how to avoid that "toy" look with this and other works speaks volumes on your talent. Well done!

Pazuzu's patina (hmmm, has a funny sound)was done using "faux bronze" antiquing compound. The brand name eludes me now as the piece was done so many years ago but the compound supposedly contained actual bronze. The ancient figures of Pazuzu such as some folks had in their homes back in the ancient Sumerian civilization were mostly cast in bronze. I experimented with a number of different compounds for the finish including butter milk which actually was quite beautiful after being dried and then sealed with a poly spray compound but unfortunately, several months later, a definite "cheesy" aroma was noticeable and parts of the outer layer actually began pealing off. The figure itself was unharmed.
