Following on from Pocket-sized professor

For once, Edelgard was free to do whatever she wanted. Or so she wished- what she really wanted to do was lounge around beside the beach, but she didn't want anyone to see her like that. She had convinced Altina to join her, but she had since wandered off somewhere, leaving the young princess alone.

Actually, I don't see anyone around. Edelgard realized. Maybe I can lounge around here safely...

She scoured the beach, glancing around in every direction. The coast was clear.

Now's my chance! The furtive future emperor sneaked towards a nearby sunlounger. She was mere steps away when she heard a voice.

"Edelgard! There you are!"

Dimitri. No relaxing for me after all. She sighed. Siccing his fellow Blue Lions on him had apparently only been enough to distract him for a little while. Ready to decline to join his frantic activities once again, she turned to face her fellow house leader. But he had a strange expression of relief on his face as he hurried up to her.

"See? Told you she would be fine," Claude breathed, hurrying behind him.

"What are you talking about?" she asked. It was then that she noticed Dimitri carrying his arm in a strange way. And a tiny hand waving at her.

"Professor?!" Edelgard gasped. She would have been much more shocked to see Byleth stand so small in Dimitri's hand if this was the first time. But she had seen it before.

"Yes, unfortunately it's happened again," Dimitri revealed, "she's become smaller."

"I mentioned thinking it was something to do with heroes who arrive in pairs," Claude told her, "then the next thing I know, His Highness here is charging off to find you."

"The same thing could happen to her, could it not?" Dimitri said, "at any rate, I am glad to see you are well."

Shrinking was something Edelgard did not want to experience for herself, even if the shrunken Byleth didn't seem to mind it too much. For now, it seemed as though she still had all of her height.

"Thank you for the concern. But I assure you I am-"

Edelgard suddenly got a sinking feeling. Dimitri and Claude appeared to grow taller before her eyes. She knew right away what was happening. It felt a lot like her speaking to the contrary had triggered it, as if she were tempting fate.

"I guess she's not fine then," Claude commented.

"I can see that. She's getting smaller!" Dimitri said.

Knowing of shrinking was one thing. Experiencing it herself was another entirely, as Edelgard was finding out. Sinking down into the ground, the people around her getting taller and taller, witnessing the world itself enlarge before her eyes... she hadn't the words to describe it. Edelgard felt like she had to do something to stop herself shrinking, but had no idea what.

I truly am getting smaller. It feels like something out of a dream... or a nightmare. Why did this have to happen to me?

By the time it finished, she was smaller than Dimitri's foot. Staring way, way up at her peers, she couldn't help but feel like the lesser of the house leaders. Though in this case, that was true in a literal sense.

"Edelgard..." Dimitri looked sorry for her. Claude wore a wide smile.

"We can't leave her down there," the latter said, "someone could step on her. Or she might get lost."

"Agreed. Here."

Dimitri crouched down. Edelgard stumbled away in fear of the giant, but managed to collect herself quickly. His hand alone was like a big platform, one already inhabited by the shrunken Byleth. Edelgard stepped aboard to join the tiny professor.

"Aww, that's no fair. How come you get to carry both of them?" Claude complained, "I should have snatched her up first!"

Edelgard wobbled as Dimitri stood. Byleth helped her to brace herself, and before she knew it the two of them were high in the air. The newly shrunken princess regarded her surroundings with disdain. She felt many things upon seeing all around her be so big. Most of all fear, especially when she caught sight of the now much more massive ocean. Edelgard hoped that Altina wasn't suffering the same fate.

"That I should shrink down to such a small size... today is ruined," she huffed.

Edelgard felt a hand on her shoulder. She turned to see Byleth, looking at her with a sad expression.

"Being small isn't so bad," she told her, "you can still enjoy some time at the beach."

"I suppose you would know," Edelgard sighed. Though she was starting to think that, since all she wanted to do was lounge around, her size wouldn't matter that much after all...
